Anyone ever add EMG style connectors for passive pickups?

My lead guitarist wants new pickups. And he's currently got shitty ass EMG-H4 pickups in his 6'er, and wants to try some other ones. But he's looking to do it in such a fashion that he won't have to rewire everything, and make it easy to try many different ones quickly.

So we're thinking of taking the existing connector:

And making a counterpart piece to attach to it, and have that piece be easily swappable from pickup to pickup.

Anyone else ever try this? or have an idea where we can get the parts to do it?

If they were active it would be a no go because of the active electronics I imagine, but in theory it should be doable, just have to find out which color goes where, and find a way to attach pins. I'd be concerned about the long length of wire you'd have to bunch up underneat the pickup.

Wouldn't it be great if ALL pickup manufacturers standardized on this kind of connector?

Electronics/surplus stores should carry connectors like that. Look into the Tyco product line.

Another option would be that you could use RJ-11 telephone connectors. They're a little more bulky, but they're readily available.

You should be able to get the connectors from DigiKey, and there's no reason you couldn't do that, as long as you figure out the pinout. However, you'd have to solder them on to the new pickup, which is as much (or more) work than soldering them to the right place in the cavity, IMO.

Division - American metal that doesn't suck. Much. Even on MySpace, and Soundclick, too.

Title fixed. Come on dude, it won't kill you to type six letters instead of three.

I don't recall the title being any different from when I posted. Maybe I've become so used to internet speak I just don't notice anymore.
