Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

the squeal you're talking about is hum noise. you'll get that with any electronic device, especially those with lots of gain. the squeal i'm talking about occurs after your pedals, and in your amp. when the signal hits the amp and overdrives it, the transistors will go microphonic, and not in a nice way. tube microphonics are cool. it usually sounds like a warm, fuzzy thing . transistor microphonics is a bit of a harsh ice pick type sound. the difference is pretty substantial.

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.

so it would be pointless to buy the boss sd-1 pedal? and just add a tiny bit of gain to it?

well, experimentation is the essence of musical fun. if you can find one for cheap, give it a whirl. i just wanted you to know the limitations of the SS amp before you pour money into something that won't work very well.

i'd second the notion of looking for a cheap(er) tube combo. i've got a tube combo, my Mesa Nomad, which wasn't cheap, but a great deal for a mint Mesa... and an old tube head, which i got dirt cheap, and has a beautifully grimey clean sound. i think that's what you're looking for, and tubes will get you there

some amps will have just a few tubes in the preamp, and a SS power section. they're usually less expensive than one with full tube circuitry. might be a good alternative.

I've experimented with this a lot for about two years. I had both the DS1 and the SD1 and I tried to do exactly what you were talking about. Basically I found that with my Spider II (which is a solid state amp) no matter how i set up the pedals I could never get a decent sounding mild overdrive out of it. Sure, it would sound acceptable everytime I plugged either of them for the first time in few weeks, but in the end I would always get bored of the sound. If it doesn't inspire you, you need to move on and find something better. I've since sold both pedals and have only regretted that I didn't get the SD1 modded. To make a long story short, I've realized that a solid state amp generally will NOT get you a slightly gritty sound on the clean setting, not even a modeling amp. I've had much better luck with the distortion channel.

Also, pickups will make a HUGE difference. I played my friends LP Studio through the amp and it responded in a very tube-like manner that was suprising to say the least. Perhaps you should try a different guitar first (straight up, no effects) to see if it's just your guitar. If it doesn't make a difference, go with a tube amp.

alright well i got the sd-1, and i have to say am very pleased. i was able to play through my amp before i bought it. it works really well on the clean channel. it helps make it sound kind of similar to a tube amp. the ds-1 works well with it too. and i have the eq set to a mid boost.

It didn't work out for me, but if you like it that's all that matters. Hope you find them more inspiring than I did.
