Duncan vs Duncan (you've heard this before)
Ok, i know it's been discussed before but i'm looking for "fresh advice".
I want to get the Blaze Neck out of the bridge position in my mahogany S-7420. I like the Blaze, but as of late, i've come to think it sounds too much like a neck pick-up (d'oh!), even in the bridge (it's smooth as hell, very "round" and very defined but lacks the bite and "dry aggressiveness" for my personnal taste). So i'm goin' down the Seymour Duncan road. So, for you pick-ups masters, what would u choose? Any advice? I'm not into speed, death, or any other kind of "grind" screaming music. I'm more of a Prong meets 7dust meets Helmet type of guy (or another way of saying it, i'm more of a "gain @ 2-3 o'clock with a ss amp that likes to "chunk-chunk" ).I want either a Custom-7 or a JB-7 (and pleeease don't come up with Dimarzio's). What do you think? To the polls! |

JB-7's do not AT ALL have that "bite" and "dry aggressiveness" that you mention, Frenchy. It's uber round. Like a super duper Blaze neck (although the upper 2/3rds of the frequency, since it's so bright, really "cut" and sing out). But you palm mute, chugga, try to get tight attack on the low strings... well, if you're not satisfied with the Blaze neck, no way will you be with the JB. I. however, love the JB-7 in the neck. That clear tone and round bass kick ass there.
Custom 7 has more bite. The Distortion has alot of bite. I can't add alot more on this.

from what I hear, JB-7's are great in Mahogany bodied guitars. I recommend Dimarzio D Activators. (j/k) I'd go with JB dude.

Sounds like you want the ceramic grittiness of a Custom.

^ What he said. If you're looking aggressive bite, the Custom is your pickup.

Honestly dude, I wouldnt recommend either for a mahogany Ibanez. I think the DiMarzio Evolution, D Sonic 7 or PAF7 would be awesome in there. I really dont think Duncans are great for the mahogany/rosewood board thing. The last time I tried a Duncan Custom in that combination it was mud city. It was the only thing I ever threw at my TriAxis that sounded like dogshit. The Custom is ceramic but it still has a huge low end and overwhelming low mid presence that clashes with mahogany/rosewood IMO. If you had an alder guitar or a maple neck thru guitar w/ mahogany sides or an ebony fretboard or something that would better.
Just my 2 cents, every DiMarzio Evo7 I've played in an Ibanez sounded amazing. Keep in mind the Evo 7 does not = the Evo 6. D Sonic and PAF 7 in mahogany = great too. |

i thought i heard you say the jb-7 was great in mahogany in some other old post? ![]() I like the bite of my invader in my other 7 (alder) but i've only heard once of someone liking it in mahogany. I'd like to get closer to this with my s7420. |

I would definently reccommend that you don't go with an invader, unless of course you enjoy a very percussive and thick attack. It won't get rid of all that much in terms of the 'roundness' you speak of. The best pickup I have ever heard in mahogany (to my ears of course) was the duncan custom that I used to have in my Les Paul (I've been meaning to change the mag back to a ceramic for a year or so now).
The JB will be better for cleans but it is not as agressive as the custom, I'd say you need to weigh the Distortion against the Custom. It'll really come down to exactly how much of that dry aggressiveness you want. The Distortion is very edgy and screamy while the Custom is closer to a beefed up PAF with more low end, low mids and higher output. |
