BKP's for my O.A.F!
Hey guys, I'm not sure the Lace's have enough bite to them and I've always wanted to try out some BKP's, so this is a good opportunity, especially if ....ing with the height doesn't change things.
So the guitar has a bolt on rosewood neck, swamp ash body and flamed maple top. The issue I'm having with the Lace deathbar is that there isn't enough treble/pres and high mids. Loads of low mids and a rounded bass though. So suggest away! I'm shooting for a Decapitated/Faceless kind of tone and I dig the tone on the new Monuments stuff too. Right now I'm feelin' either the Aftermath or Blackhawk. |

Dude. Consider the DA8s if you haven't tried them. I love my BKPs to bits but the DA8s in my OAF ....ing scream and mine has the exact woods your does. The high end on the bridge pickup is a tad harsh on the higher registers but the overall tone more than makes up for it and the neck is great for leads.
I thought that I would be replacing them but for now I am more than impressed by them! |

I'd vote Painkillers to achieve the tone you describe. I prefer it strongly to the Aftermath because it seems more rounded off in the top end, not such piercing highs, but sharp cutting hi mids. I also liked the response better, it seems to have more reaction to picking attack. And instead of being as percussive as the AM, it has more grind to it.

I've no doubt the BKPs will be a bit better than the DA8s but I don't think they will be good enough to justify the price on CAD dollar exchange rates

I'de consider the Coldsweats if I were you, with that wood combination I think they'de do pretty much what you just described.
I'll be able to give you a better idea once my own O.A.F neck is set on the body I made; just waiting for my laquer guy to be done now. EDIT: Avoid anything ceramic (maybe except the warpig) if you dont want shrill high end, especially avoid the ceramic nailbomb. |

D Activator 8s sound really good, and PeteyG gets a really nice tone from his mayones 8 with Rebel Yells. Black Dog and Emeralds sound sweet too.
Also, why not Lundgren? Edit: also, i see people recommending the ceramic Nailbomb for nice 8 string tone too, including Nolly! And no, ceramic pickups don't add shrillness, they add harder and tighter attack and tighter low end. -------------------------------------- What will metal be doing in ten years? Hmm that sounds appealing too. Soo many options
![]() One of my friends has a guitar with (i think) nailbombs. So i'll try that out first and see how I like it. |

I loooove the Aftermaths in my swamp ash 7. They're more focused in the mid-mids than in the high-mids tho but they have plenty of presence imo. If you want high-mids go with a Painkiller or secondarily a Rebel Yell.

) and in my experience with BKP's, it does add shrillness. I had both an alnico nailbomb and a ceramic one and the ceramic one was noticeably glassier in the high end. Combined with the Swamp Ash body I had on that axe, the high end was unbearably shrill so I got rid of it. Now I have D-Activator 8's in it and while there's still a good amount of high end, it's not glassy or shrill at all.I have the actual experience of combining the C-Bomb with a Swamp Ash bodied guitar; it's really best to just avoid making that mistake lol. I really do think the Coldsweat would do what you want but the D-Activator 8's will also be really nice; I really like the set I have in my 8 string. |

Well I cant compete with Tim's recommendations, but Swamp Ash doesnt have much mids, mostly just ultra tight boomy lows and sweet sweet highs. Id go with something that has good mids. Aftermath has got to be the one. Coldsweats dont have much mids so I would avoid that. But Ive never tried them in that wood combo so I cant say for sure that they would be a horrible choice. I have alnico Warpigs in my swamp ash bodied, rosewood neck Blackmachine B2 and it works very very well as it lends itself to the low characteristics well, has tons of mids and adds to the sweetness of the highs. If your guitar was maple neck thru then Id recommend the D Activators as a possibility, especially if your on a budget or wouldn't mind saving the cash. Ive never tried painkillers in swamp ash but they absolutely sounded amazing in a Mahogany Ibanez 7. So with all that being said, I dont think painkillers or even D Activators would hurt, but Id heavily look into the Warpigs or Aftermaths. Aftermaths would be pretty good cause they are well balanced across the board. They are heavy on the mids, tight in the lows, and have singing highs. Havent tried Nailbombs yet so I cant comment on those. Yeah, Warpigs or Aftermaths would be my choice for that guitar. Id be real curious to know your thoughts on the Cold sweats if you go with those. Maybe they dont have much mids but work well for low 8 string tuning.

Yeah what you were saying about the aftermath the other day is really appealing, so maybe a set of those.

I would recommend Painkillers. Miracle Man is what I normally would recommend anyone for trying to get a Faceless/Decapitated tone but it's not tight enough for a low F#.
I really don't suggest the cold sweats. While I like them a lot actually I just think it's not really voiced that well towards death metal. Whenever I hear clips or watch videos of CS's dialed for a dm tone it's all too shrill for my ears. My suggestions would be Black Hawks (whenever the 8 comes out), aftermaths, painkillers, and black dogs. Also what kind of band has the style of lead tone you want? |

if you want a decapitated'ish tone, i'd advise you to get a aftermath. Its the closest to the tone of decapitated imho.
Putting a painkiller into a swamp ash guitar like that would produce a quite cutting top end. it may be too much for any good. i use my painkillers in a flying v and a basswood baritone... |
