Sanding/painting question.
hey guys. Well i've used the heat gun and scraper on my guitar (a 7620) and stripped the paint off. Underneath, there appears to be another like layer of something? like a grey coating or some shit. I'm assuming thats just an undercoat. Before i go bonkers...i am wondering do i use the heat gun again to take that off or just sand it off? And when i spray my guitar its new color do i need to apply this shit/coating on it before i put the paint on or do i just spray straight over the wood. When i was using the heat gun a bit cracked off revealing the pure wood under it, and i know before i paint it must be pure wood obviously, but yeh...do i just sand this off or what? do i need it when i spray my new paint or just spray straight over the wood? hope i get some help. thanks.

Thats called primer. It goes under the paint. Its like a base coat to make sure the color of the paint your spraying on will stay consistant and also so that the new paint sticks to the body better. The place thats gonna paint your guitar will know about primer ;D Its weird though, when i sanded my 7620 down, there wasnt a base coat. But yah, if youre doing a solid color finish you should use a primer before you add the paint. Id sand it smooth with a 200 and then a 400 grit paper by hand then paint over it. Or sand it off and reapply your own new primer.

If you can get a smooth finish on the existing primer just paint over that. No point removing it only to re-primer.

ahh i get yah now, i thought it was that. The thing is already took a chunk off the primer off, it like sorta cracked when i used the heat gun and i just pulled it off to reveal the wood. I am choosing between just spraying it myself or taking too a panel beaters too do it. but yes...i'll take off this primer stuff and get it down too bare wood and go from there!!

Why not just give the bare spot a good few coats of primer and then sand it down so it's smooth? There's no point taking off all the primer, you're going to have to reprimer it anyway.

yeh thats what i am doing
i've sanded down and blended in the bit that was missing with the primer. I had a few bits missing so some of its bare wood, but most of it is still primed. So yeh! i'll take some pics tomorrow n show yah's. Its feeling really smooth though so i am pretty happy. I've got the face of the guitar done, and bits of the edges etc. So i am gonna get cracking on the rear tomorrow. but as i said i'll take some pics, and show yah's what the go is and if anything isn't right just let me know please thanks for all the helps so far guys, very appreciated. |
