my question is, why is it that EMG's sound so much better through tube amps than solid state amps. but passive pickups sound great through both?

I think EMGs sound fine through solidstate amps, I think it's just that most people don't like the "compressed" sound they have through "compressed" solidstate amps.

oh, ok well idk i was at guitar cente and it seemed like they played better through a marshall tube amp. but then again the solid state was a Marshall MG50, lol.

yeah, how do you think a EMG 81/SA/SA set would sound through a Crate XT120R. i know it's alot to ask, but im considering get that set of EMG's

sorry to be the one to tell you this but tube amps almost ALWAYS sound better

Emg's hit tube amp front ends hard which can tighten them up much the way having an OD in front will. This does not impact an ss amp in the same way. An ss amp will just get more distorted with a hotter signal. Though most ss amps worth there salt already have a very tight attack to begin with. I think EMG's sound good through both, its just that tube amps react diffenrently to the hotter signal of an EMG. To my ears it causes some sort of natural compression, im not sure. Maybe one of the tube amp buffs here could explain more.

Better than shit stock pickups, but still not very good.

Try to exclude the possibility of suffering which the order of nature and the existence of free-wills involve, and you find that you have excluded life itself.
