would it be particularly anticlimatic if i said the same thing about my japanese Lo-TRS 7? Restring with EB 10-56's, stretch em in, tune up and i dont need to retune until i snap a string or am playing a gig. The record has been three months on the same strings (i was skint!) and they NEVER went out. So it may be the Ernie's or it could be the trem, and im willing to bet the trem.

They need to come out with a case-hardened/heat-treated tremolo with locking studs - combine the best aspects of the Edge/Lo-Pro and OFR.

Fuck it, you only live once!

Although people trashtalk it, the TRS7 is a really good trem. It has a hardened baseplate and is made by Takeuchi in Japan. The only downside is the studs, which are kind of soft.

Setting aside personal preferences to focus solely on manufacturing and materials, and there is absolutely no comparison. Floyd purposely limits how many of the patents he will license out to any one company, insuring that it is impossible for a competitor to offer a superior product.

Mike has a '88 Jackson Dinky with an OFR that he plays in his cover band. He'll play three 45 minute sets, throw it in the case, and drive home. The guitar will then go on a stand and sit untouched for a few weeks. I'll come over, pick it up, and not even have to tune it. The damn thing is more stable than a tune-o-matic.

I was totally a Floyd hater until I tried the real thing. They're so rock solid that it changed my mind. Now someone hating the height of it? I can totally see that, because the difference between it and a low pro is substantial.
I've owned every fucking floyd on the planet, from the "Pro", to an OFR, to a Gotoh Floyd, and the Ibanez trems. As well as some shitty ones, but we won't go there.

For reference, Gotoh's trem is hardened steel, just like an OFR, and comes with the locking studs. The reason the other manufactuers don't go this far is either tone(Schaller) or because they want a cheaply-made alternative to an OFR. Gotoh also manufactures the Edge trems for Ibanez, and they went for the softer base metal for tonal reasons, the same way Schaller did. The Edge has fully hardened knife-edges, and hardened plate on the underside so that the intonation screws don't strip out, going further than even Schaller went.

The Edge and LoPro Edge hold tune 100% as well as an OFR. Period. I would put the 18 year old Edge trem on my 750 up against any trem right now, and it will function flawlessly.

There's a reason the 2 biggest whammy-bar abusers on the planet use the Edge trem. It works.
