![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | EMG707 and clean tones all right all right we all know that EMG707 rocks for metal and heavy tones, but do they work for clean tones? do they suck? any recommendations? (about a pickup that is good in heavy and clean tones) references: Opeth (they mix the two styles) Signature Removed - Image file size must be under 400 kb |

![]() | Id say the cleans for the EMGs arent the best, but definatley useable. Opeth use Duncans, and Im able to get a good Opeth tone with my JB and Jazz, which have some of the best cleans out there as well as good heavy sounds. |

![]() | I've got a 707 in the neck of my 7621 and I think it sounds great clean, with or without effects. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | 707s are about the exact opposite of Opeth. I mean, complete 180. Opeth's tone is round, lush, and gorgeous. Some of the best cleans ever. But their tone lacks alot of that real heavy attack and definition - something the 707 excels at. For the record, I love both 707s and Opeth. I still think they have a nice sound, but I like bright, articulate pickups with good attack and clarity. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The EMG clean tone, well, it's kind of like marmite, you either like it or you don't. It's a very compressed sound and lacks a lot of the dynamics of a passive pickup, ie, it responds a lot differently, especially to picking. On the upshot, everything is crystal clear. If you want that opeth sound then your best bet is probably to go passive and find a nice set of them. Actually, as a side note, i did use to love an 85 (or 89) in the neck and an 81 in the bridge. In fact, I am not a guy who hates EMG's, just a guy who hates EMG for not making their pickups for 7strings in the same size as the rest of the world! In fact, if they made an 89 version for the seven string, i may have to go off and get a guitar that i won't mind putting them in! |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Any passive pickups recommendations? I was thinking, maybe I could put an EMG707 in the bridge and a passive in the neck, cause almost all the time when I hit clean tones I switch to the neck pickup (I like the neck pickup sound for cleans cause it's more bassy and fat) |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | EMG actives have some big advantages over passive pickups. - Actives are not grounded to the bridge/strings like passives, which ultimately means grounded to YOU, the guitarist. This means the risk of electrical shock is greatly reduced (an issue if you play in a place with shoddy wiring). - Actives are INCREDIBLY quiet. Due to having an internal preamp, the magnet strength and windings can remain low. More windings and stronger magnets can mean more electrical interference and RF signal 'gunk'. Since they have an internal preamp, they are shielded incredibly well, eliminating all the wierd noises that can come with passives. - The low magnet strength also means great sustain, since the pickup's pull on the strings is only marginal. - Full-range frequency response. Actives reproduce a wider frequency range for guitar tone, which means better highs and lows. Most passives, especially high-output passives, have a big frequency bump in the mids. This last one here is somewhat subjective as to its value, since some people prefer the sound of passives, and some prefer the sound of actives. If you love Opeth's tone, well, to me, those guys have the quintessential 'passive' pickup sound. As for recommendations, I'd think about 1. Seymour Duncan - Neck: Jazz-7, Bridge: JB-7 or Custom-7 2. Dimarzio - Neck: PAF7 or Blaze Neck, Bridge: Blaze Custom (for Opeth-type sound), EVO7 (for EMG 707-type sound). ![]() |
