IIRC, you run all four leads from each pickup into the switch, and it handles all the tapping inside of it. i think it's significantly cooler, but my playing is all in the studio these days, so i use the different combinations when i record. for live stuff, few people would probably hear the difference.

The Blaze with adjustable poles is like the SDS-1 in that it has the ceramic magnets flanking the poles. When has ANYONE ever liked that in a middle position? The only reason I can think of that they did it that way was to only tool up for one bobbin, that they could use for both the humbuckers and single. I make those 7-string singles out of the same bobbin, but I use Alnico V magnets. Ideally though, I wish they were slightly taller, like a strat bobbin. That's what Duncan would build you, except it would have a triangle base unless you specified otherwise. I'd like to make a bobbin in the strat tradition with a fiber top and bottom, but I just don't have time to mess with it. Plus, that kind of wind should have a cover on it, and there aren't any covers readily available, except maybe that flat one from the WD Kent Armstrong. But that one isn't cheap enough to buy for a rewind, because I can get used New 7's for rewinds and have two bobbins. The fat 1/4" poles of a Tom Anderson or Rio Grande are fine, but they can't give off the juicy vintage single coil attack either, so they're just really another alternative to traditional, not an answer. So in the mean time I'm still making them when I need one, and when I have a leftover bobbin from a humbucker I can make one. ![]() And BTW I'm sure Bare Knuckle would make a fantastic 7-string single, better than mine. So maybe they're the answer for right now, price notwithstanding.
