Best of both worlds - you won't have the sticky, glassy-feeling gloss, but the wood will be adequately protected.

Dumple Stilzkin will become famous soon enough
I have sanded down 2 guitars in my time, and both have gotten the tung oil treatment. It goes on easy and turns out beautiful. I put 7 coats on my RG, I think I could have put on about 5 or maybe even less, but I wanted it to look
uber shinny! I think it turned out great, course the piece of wood also plays a major role, so if you plan on doing it to yer 1527 it should look similar to mine. I have read you will have to reapply more oil. But it takes quite a while for the oil to wear out, my other axe is still going 3 years strong from only 3 coats. On with the pictures!

Between coats I used the finest (00000?) steel wool I could find, and also when I was finished. It actually has changed the tone slightly, it is even more punchy, really sounds good with chords. And the low b tone is awesome.

"Satin" isn't a "luthier" finish... it's just a non-glossy clearcoat that can be polyester, polyurethane, lacquer, etc. Anyone who's painted anything knows that paint comes in different degrees of lustre ranging from "gloss" to "flat" with 3 to 5 variants in between.

Tung oil will protect from average environmental exposure as long as it's well maintained. But it doesn't protect from impact as well as a hard clearcoat.
