Sp3ktral has a spectacular aura about
Direct mounting

i've got an ESP M-307 and I've been considering my options for pickups. this guitar came with EMG-HZ's (yuck) and so the body is routed for emg pickups, basically a soapbar.

can you think of any problems of just direct mounting new pickups if i get them? i have no intention of getting EMGs, just to be clear

you would need some kind of ring around them, i'm sure you could get one made with no holes for pickup screws, and direct mount your pickups... otherwise it would just look entirely silly with 2 gaping holes in the body... but theres no real point to buy rings and then direct mount the pickups, especially since direct mounting only affects the aesthetics of the guitar, and nothing else...

Sorry, but you are kind of screwed.

Solution? Give me your guitar. I will put EMG's in it and it will look great, and sound awesome!

If you put in smeller pickups, there will be huge holes around the pickups.

You could get pickup rings, but if you are stuck on direct mounting, the only way is to have big holes or to fill and reroute everything, which would still come out looking a bit weird.

Youv'e done right . You got rid of the snarly hz's good job. I would get an emg 81-7 bridge and 707 neck these are active pickups what emg is known for. But since I don't know what you play I would reccomend 707's.
My story is in my customized satin black jackson DR7T I tried to direct mount pickups that were once suspended ( weak duncan designed although very balanced, but weak)
They're wasn't enough wood to place the pickup high enough without shims, wood shims. This was not a direct mount and defeats the purpose of it. I got EMG 81-7s in that guitar and lived happily ever after. My next guitar I am going to direct mount some humbuckers and shove the extra long pole pieces through a solid single piece ebony neck. Then convert it to active system.

Direct mounting will look hilarious if it is not EMGs you are putting in. That should be plain just from looking at a passive pickup in comparison to any EMG 7.

All is not lost. Like everyone has already said you can get a mounting ring/bezzle. Noodles had an EMG in his Jackson Stars which he changed out for a passive Duncan. He knows a company that do mounting rings size to order. I can't remember what they are called so I would recommend doing a search on the site for Noodles Jackson stars (No I will not do it for you! )

Alternatively wait until Dave is back online.

Dave's (Frets on the Net) products are top-notch.

Division - American metal that doesn't suck. Much. Even on MySpace, and Soundclick, too.

Three of the four words are used almost every day. The "bless" gets changed most of the time

And Dormant: you're welcome!
