NPD: Carvin DC727 + BKP Ceramic Nailbomb & Cold Sweat (+ pics 'n clips)

thanks zimbloth for these

so all of the sudden i have SIKTH's guitar tone... i did an A/B comparison with my ENGL clip and their "Bland Street Bloom"... sounds pretty damn close at least. BTW, i hated the guitar sound on their last album when i first heard it... so yes yes, i haven't fully made up my mind about the C-Bomb yet. the Cold Sweat is a definite win for bluesy, jazzy and clean stuff + it rocks in single-coil mode. as for the the Ceramic Nailbomb... much clearer, punchier and interesting than anything i've had before... sounds both kind of awesome and kind of disturbing, some high frequencies stick out even when presence and treble are set to 25%... i might've gone wrong with the Ceramic part specifically for my guitar, but i wanna make some music with it before further judgement... meanwhile here are the test results:

(there are some old clean and lead guitars in there still that are done with a POD X3, but the metal is done w/ NB and the lead in the middle of the track is w/ CS...)

EDIT! i only left the best sounding test-clip online now, which is... ta-daa, the slightly mixed BKP + ENGL Invader version:

Sounds pretty good to me!
I've got the Nailbomb/Coldsweat combo in my Carvin DC727 too, but I went Alnico not ceramic, as I was tring to "warm Up" my bridge sound,
and Tim recommended I go with the standard Nailbomb.
I love em. my Carvin is a really really great sounding guitar now.

BTW really cool looking Carvin you have, is that a Transparent Green finish on the Alder?

Definitely nice sounding, interesting songs too. Sweet Carvin by the way.

my 727 is emerald green, thanks! and the NB is good! clear and punchy. but i want better. somewhat too much low-mid focused sound for my taste right now. besides it is really somwhat fizzy which is not so good... probably the ceramic magnet causing that. do you have any clips of that Alnico 5 NB and what woods is your Carvin made of?

Hehe, yeah, well I'm the 2nd owner. The original was a Carvin collector in Florida, so that guitar's got a few miles on it... It was in virtually mint condition when I got it, and the same when I sold it on so good to see it's finally getting some proper use!

This is the only "metal" clip I have of it. It's thru my JSX.
No fizz, but I know what you mean, the Miracle man in my 7620 is alot
tighter, but the Nailbomb sounds much better for playing lead.

My 727 is all mahogany with a maple top and a maple board.
I'll rtry to record some better clips thru my Mark III as soon as I can.
(I sold the JSX).

LOVE the N/B through the Engl! I can hear what you mean, regarding concerns about ceramic vs alnico... I'm betting you could get an alnico magnet from Tim and swap them out, do some A/B recordings with the different magnets. I don't think it's really an issue though, it sounds killer to me!!

Great tune, too, btw!

thanks man

i think i'm gonna try some other BKP in the bridge too though... this isn't quite the sound i'm after, though it's definitely not bad at all.

Just curious as to what wood your Carvin is made out of ? I just got a Ceramic Nailbomb and so far I don't find the highs to be sharp.

i was puzzled about it myself up until now. the previous owner and even the ex-ex-owner were about 99% convinced it's maple neck through with a mahogany body... BUT! it doesn't sound really like it, so i wrote Carvin and sent them my guitars serial number a week ago and they said it's actually got an alder body! so there, the ceramic NB7 is too bright for my green baby.

Yeah I figured it was Alder because my Ceramic Nailbomb does not sound overly bright or harsh on the highs in my Maple guitar. Alder is tough because it makes alot of pickups sound thin and bright. I would guess something like a HolyDiver or Warpig would be better for ya.

I have a C-pig, and it is a great pickup for Metal and would be good in a bright guitar. Alinco pickups like the regular Nailbomb and Holydiver will be warmer than the C-pig though. Depends on what you're goin for. I haven't tried the HD yet but the alinco NB was big, warm and smooth sounding, just not very tight and focused like a ceramic.

Wow, total Sikth tone, yep. That's kinda cool.

I dig the Engl. This tune is weird as hell, BTW.

hmm, cool. now i changed my rig now a bit and am actually getting sort of the tones i was hoping from the NB7 ceramic as well. playing it through Crate BV150 that was... lying around... hehe.

C-Pig sounds like an attractive option still.

Just for your info I just got a c-pig put in my alder body maple neck fender baritone. It has filled out everything the guitar was missing. PERFECT heavy pickup for alder maple.
