Anyone evcer notice how even though two guitars will be the same scale length, you can get away with small/loose strings on one of them, but the other one doesn't sound right unless you have big/tight strings on them?

On my buds ibanez 7 he's got a 60-12 set tuned to A which plays and sounds great, but my Squier strat 'likes' having the 60 tuned to C# or else it's all attack and no sustain (probably due to the maple fretboard). On the other hand my four string bass with a 95-40 set on it is tuned to D standard and sounds great (rosewood fretboard)

It's not a problem cause I like my string sizes anyway. But I found it intriguing.

Could you guys list woods/wood combos that like bigger or smaller strings? So that others might have some info when buying axes.
