Air Norton in neck / D-Activator (Neck) in bridge?
My RG7620 is still winging its way across the Atlantic (hopefully) and the first thing in line after a good setup is a pickup swap (never really liked the stockers). Probably going to go for an Air Norton neck but I also enjoy playing melodeath as well (Mercenary is currently doing the rounds on my playlist).
Now many moons ago I used the traditional EMG 85/81 combination in a basswood bodied Heartfield Talon and found the 81 in the bridge position to be a little treble-heavy and shrill for my taste. In a moment of frustration I swapped the two over and found the 85 in the bridge to be somewhat of a revelation. Now working on the assumption that the D-Activators are based on these EMG models (D-Activator neck on the 85 and the bridge on the 81) I was planning to use the D-Activator neck version in the bridge of the 7620 (haven’t lost anyone yet have I?) I’ll be keeping the wiring standard. Is this a totally gonzo mentalist idea? Any other suggestions will of course be gratefully received and taken on board. Other elements in the chain are quite simple: Tube mic pre > Audigy 2 ZS > Guitar Rig 3 (Ultrasonic Model most commonly). Edit: Ok I take it was a bit too mentalist then! ![]() What would folks recommend as complimentary to the Air Norton then? I'm thinking Blaze or D-Sonic may be the best bet (if a little obvious). D-activators work fine
The D-activator model work quite nicely in the positions they wre designed for. They don't have the same output, so that may be a problem if you put a neck ickup in the bridge position, besides the fact that the string spacing may be completely off. There is not so much treble coming from the D-activator bridge model as there is from the EMGs. It has a really balanced response. I reccommend leaving it where it was made to be.
