[DIMARZIO] Evo7 / Blaze vs. Activators (2/7 series)
Howdy Folks,
Im thinking about getting new pickups for my 7321.I always heard good stuff about that evo7 and blaze but today a guy told me that the newer activator pickups made by dimarzio are great as well. Actually he compared them to those EMGīs (81) What I am looking for,is a powerful and hard sound e.g. korn. (He also told me that korn is using emgīs and thatīs why I REALLY got interested in opening this thread) There are 2 kinds of these activator pickups ,a 719/720 and 219/220 ... and I donīt really know which is the better one. Iīd like to know what you guys can recommend to me... Thanks in advance, Sawyer |

This belongs in the Pickups, Electronics & General Tech section... anyways
IIRC Korn uses DiMarzio PAF7 pickups, before their sig models they used Blazes in Universe guitars The pickups the guy was talking about are DiMarzio D Activators and there is a bridge and a neck pup and nothing else for sevens, check the DiMarzio website. Everybody that's used them here seems to think they sound sterile and lifeless.

Korn uses EMGs? Wouldn't that piss off their Dimarzio endorsment? Also, isn't there only DP 719 and 720? I have never seen any other type of D-Activator pickup... D-Activators are fequently compared to EMGs. I have a pair but they haven't been installed yet. I could be wrong, but that guy sounds like he may be talking out his

The guy is definitely talking out his ass...
The 219/220 are the six string D Activators

Anyway, as for a reccomendation, Air Nortons are always great neck pickups, Evos are well liked even though they are too middy for me, and Blaze Customs are probably my favorite bridge.

Munky uses PAFs on his guitars IIRC. A low gain pickup. But they use triple recs, so they have a nice amount of distortion.

erics right the evo's have abit much mid expecially if your playing korn stuff, and they tend to get feedback because they are a very hot pickup

PAFs do sound great if you have something to boost the gain after the fact. They are very smooth, clear, and articulate.

Korn definatley uses Dimarzio Pafs... that's what my K-7 has. They sound great. The only time I've ever heard of Korn using EMGs is in the Ibanez 8-string, and that's just cuz they're stock... for all I know, they could've swapped them out for Dimarzios. I'm about to get a D-Activator for the bridge in my 7621 (already have the Air Norton ready and waiting to be installed), which is virtually identical to your 7321... I'll let you know how that sounds. Always cool to see another Korn fan.

Well what sound are you going for? A distinctly Korn sound?

well. to get a very korn sound youre goign to have to follow the whole rig, which is expensive. if you want that tone, id say pafs are good, but youre going to need alot of gain afterwards, from an amp modeler, distortion pedal, or an amp. if you want to push less gain later, the evo is really good in the bridge, but wont have quite the same tone

^Yea. And what exactly do you mean by THE Korn sound? The guitars sound totally different on the last two records, and even the Issues album sounds way different from say, the first one. On the last records, I believe Munky was running like 4 heads and 8 cabinets at once... now THAT rig would be expensive. But for the older sound, like the first couple of records, you'd need a K-7 or Universe with Pafs or Blazes, plus a Triple Recto and maybe a distortion pedal (Digitech Metal Master and Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi come to mind) not to mention all the crazier effects... all very pricey, like ibnzorange said.

People, people... Actually, you can get darn close to the Korn sounds with -
1. 7-string guitar tuned to A standard, with medium strings, preferably standard scale. 2. Medium to low output humbuckers. Nothing too aggresive 3. A modern amp modeler. There you go. Shoot for more Recto-type sounds, and those pedals have plenty of FX that will easily get you in the ballpark. Trying to EXACTLY replicate Munky's rig? Unnecessary, and hell... you may not even like it after you're done.

Wolf is right. you just need A standard tuning, medium-low output pickups that have some growl and clarity, a nice amp/distortion, and some FX... not a whole lot to it.
a fat-sounding distortion is recommended, and the effects you'll want are chorus and flanger, and a whammy if you want to spend some more cash. the effects go in front of the distortion for that cool sound

Im not a millionaire like munky is. I donīt even need that much ,since this is just for home.
Id like to have a low and hard sound. First Im gonna buy a whammy pedal (digitech) ... But are those PAFs really THE choice ? Oh,and I dont mean the sound from See you on t.o.s. or Untitiled.I mean their REALLY good and older stuff. |
