go ask a tasty bit of minky if she’d rather be screwed by a flat head or bolted by hex?
there’s a reason i took that as a stage name in worms. simple, really. H

I don't think it makes any tonal difference I just prefer the look of Hex bolts, although Tim did mention something about a slightly tighter Bottom end but in all honesty that could be me misunderstanding him cos I was pretty excited about making my order & having the Chance to speak to someone who actually understood what i was trying to explain in terms of what I wanted from the pups.

THE SAGA CONTINUES - the anatomy of a wee beastie
ladies & gentlemen, part deux of our tale, in which one intrepid techie axeman (james '7 dying trees' mcilroy) & one totally clueless singer (hal sinden) descend to the very depths of the guitar modding underworld, only to return from the battleground with a weapon so rock it even made jesus drop his sandals:
(cue opening strings seguing into a tense, hushed 3 note unresolved cadence as the screen fades from black onto...) ![]() alone on the hill, the lonely goatherd... my glorious RG7620, sat alone, happy and unaware of the savage butchery that awaits it. only recently tuned up to standard B, then E from it's original A, then D and content with its dimarzio blaze custom bridge pickup and a stock new 7 neck pickup. little does it know... ![]() that THESE mighty bastards shall soon rest within it. note the subtle use of backing, the etched insignia (it's all gone a bit patrick bateman) ![]() snippy snippy. the guitar vasectomy. note how young james' testicles look oddly like bent fingers. strange. ![]() the old'uns removed and duly sent on a burning longboat to ebay valhalla as their wives sing their laments from the cliffs above... the scene of impending doom - the original wiring which soon shall suffer the rage of mcilroy. (note my cunning use of 5 springs from when i used to be down in G, this enables no man of womanborn to divebomb. i have to get hercules to do my overdubs when recording) ![]() t'other side, where james had viciously removed the plastic & metal nubbins (how we love that word) ![]() have at you, vile stock circuitry, you shall never realise your dream of becoming a microwave oven, HA! ![]() casualties of war. seen here is the 2nd spark plug, but as the nitros will be bypassing the ignition process, it will no longer be needed. ibanez have been informed of their futile attempts at switchery. ![]() using a process known as 'bendage', learnt from ultimatebender.com, the side plates are now made to fit the RG7620 cavities. ![]() and lo, the chosen of god did walk into the land of pickup recess, and they did feast upon harmonics, and breakfast cereals, and... ![]() lunch at the mcilroy household. ![]() james' butane hell-torch, which incidentally is powered by the screams of children suffering at the hands of dentists. when plugged in, all women within 2 square miles begin to weep, anally. as seen here, it's so dangerous it has to be caged within of those 'magic hand' buzzing coils you used to use as a kid. risky stuff. ![]() an imperial siege tripod advances on the wiring pot, brutally inflicting +3 damage points on the renegade army. james' other tools look on in awe. ![]() far from its nest, the infant cyber-parrot lay down its head and breathed it's last... ![]() apparently james actually took to blowtorching all available wiring with a can of deodorant and a cheap lighter. he's since signed up to anger management classes. ![]() young mcilroy's influence for this moment of wiring was the bishop disembowelment scene from the end of ridley scott's 'aliens'. note how one wire on the left there is so primed for face melting metal shreddery that it's actually aglow and attempting to attack the camera. ![]() the conclusion. you've seen the bit in that superman film where that lass gets completely engulfed in the huge computer thing? well that's what happens with all this wiring if you play country on this guitar with both bridge & neck pickups out of phase. ![]() the guitar, strung, but silent... ![]() ...and then with its highest string having been plucked. it actually emits light. if you play a chord, you perceivably tan, i shit thee not. so for a full rundown of what wiring james re-designed for the guitar, you'll find it here: http://www.sevenstring.org/forum/pic...g-madness.html but needless to say, it's amazing. the sheer amount of combinations that are possible gives me the sensation of the early stages of bleeding from my eyeballs, so i have to play in the dark to worsen the effect. i thought i'd be bemused beyond understanding, but amazingly (for me, anyway) i've since recorded using a specific phasing & coil tapping variation - he was absolutely right. guy's a genius, basically. however, the tale is far from over. we discovered that the poles on the underside of the BKPs were fairly long, and whilst they fit fine into most instruments, for some reason the RG7620's depressions are a tad more shallow than yer average 7. so you'd think, hey, fine, just go get it done when you can and for now just deal? problem is that i was needing to practice for the tour i leave for this week and this is my only guitar useable for leech woman. panic. it actually got to the point, after much phoning around, that dougie (of blackmachine) even offered for me to pop round his on sunday for him to rout it out and return it for use on monday. got some thinking done and figured - bugger it, no, dougie's busy enough as it is and surely it's just drilling not actual routing that's needed? james... as ray winstone so eloquently put it - "where's yer tool?" (to be continued) (in the next post) (dramatic pause) |
