Adventures In Soldering
So, I rushed over to the nearest guitar shop after work (I get off work at 5:30, usually get out of there at 5:35 or later, and the shop closes at 6:00) and found their pickup section.
Not only did they have a JB in stock and a bunch of the other usual pickups from Duncan and DiMarzio, they also had a Drop Sonic (6-string), a Blaze (already have one), and an EVO 7 (no interest, but cool to see another 7-string pickup in town). Opened everything up, did the soldering job (my first time), didn't burn myself, but burned off a few hairs that weren't tied back properly The wiring job looks a mess, and there's a couple slightly melted spots on the shielding of a couple of the wires but it works, and everything looks great when the cover's closed Sounds awesome! Exactly what I hoped it would be ![]() I was worried at first because when I plugged into my amp, the signal was coming through really weak (clean tones were barely audible and distorted tones sounded weak, almost clean). Then I remembered my cable's shoddy, so I wiggled the end that's plugged into the amp (which is the end that gives me problems) and it worked fine from then on ![]() |

Yeah, it was pretty scary working on one of my guitars with no previous soldering experience (other than having it taught to me at work, and watching them closely every time they do anything, but it was my first time doing the work myself). But I know that 2 blocks from my apartment is a guitar tech's shop, and the guy installed the Blaze in my Schecter and could probably fix anything I could do to the Ibanez
At least it was a simple setup, nothing too confusing. Just a pickup and 2 knobs ![]() |

Awesome. Nice going and congrats. I can't wait until manufacturers start designing these things to be replaced WITHOUT SOLDERING. I spoke loud to get anyone's attention who might be in a position to do something.
Yeah, I mean really... this is 2007. Nevertheless, I'm glad you like your new pickup! |
