Direct Mounting?
what's the deal with this, does it alter tone? can you do it if you have pickup rings fitted? how? IS IT WORTH IT?
thanks all

It has absolutely no effect on tone. If you want to fit rings, you can, as long as you have enough clearance between the top of the guitar and the strings.

It looks better. I find it hard to believe 350g of mass on the body screwed in rather than suspended on springs imrpoves tone - its not even like the whole pickup touches the body for a higher contact area between vibrating surfaces - its just the pickup legs that touch the body.

But Eddie Van Halen says it sounds better and .....wait....nevermind.
Anyway I'm with stitch216, it all boils down to how you wants your guitar to look.

I HAVE PICKUP RING MOUNTING SCREWS MOUNTING MY PICKUPS TO THE BODY. YOU REALLY DON'T NEED ANY MORE THAN THAT.

I'd use wood screws, the right size to pass through the "feet" of the pickup without threading into them. I owned a direct mount guitar that actually had the inserts (like for trem studs) for the pickups to screw into. That may have been overkill. My guitar came with springs and huge hunk of neoprene underneath it. Now it's got neoprene and 70 lbs of foam.

No difference, direct mount pickups are padded with foam, so the onlyvibrational transfer would be through a screw, and even then the foam would have a damepening effect.
Personally i find pickup rings make life easier when you want to adjust pickup height. |
