X2N Users?
Hey all,
I recently put in a Duncan 59' and JB (coil tapped with push/pull) in my Ibanez 1527, but I'm not diggin the tone of the JB in it too much. The mids don't seem as focused and just dosen't sound as good as it did withmy alder bodied guitars, so I was recommended the X2N. Does anyone have one (the pickup thread didn't have anything, and my search didn't come up with anything much) and does anyone know how it would sound coil tapped? Thanks! - Irfaan - ![]() |

its a 4 conductor pickup just like the jb, coil tapping it is simple, look at the schematic for an RG7620 on the ibanez site and the wire colors will match up to your switch... the x2n7 in my opinion is the perfect pickup, for the tone i want anyways... lots of people here also recommend the ds7, and i don't doubt it is also an absolutely crushing pickup. the x2n7 is a very focused, crisp, tight pickup, its got great highs, a very tight low end, and still has enough mids where it doesn't sound scooped, like i felt the blaze sounded... i'd say its probably the polar opposite of the JB
i've only tried the x2n7 in neck through guitars though with string through tune-o-matics, one with alder wings and thin maple cap, the other with mahogony wings and a 1/2" maple cap, both with maple neck, though the mahogony one also had ebony strips between the mahogony wings and the neck blank, so it could sound totally different in basswood with a trem, i think Mawdyson has an RG1527 with an X2N7 in it, so maybe you can get his take on it...

I have an RG1527 with an X2N7. It sounds amazing, works great with the basswood body.

posted before my final edit ![]() isn't the default wiring on the 1527 a coil tapped 5 way switch, where the 2nd and 4th positions are coil tapped? even if its not, you can wire it up just like a RG7620 with that switch and come out with what you want... |

I re-wired it to a 3 way with a master coil tap on the tone (push/pull). I've always been a Jackson player and am just used to the 3 way

not a bad option at all, i'm a big fan of 3 ways myself, though i tend to prefer the gibson style 3 way, though i'm wanting to try the petrucci style 3 way now

I still want to try the X2N7, but I'd recommend the DS7 over any pickup in the world right now. Best...tone....ever... (at least through the TriAxis/F-30/ENGL). I can't imagine anything being better than the DS7.
