Kahler vs Floyd Rose
According to your experiences, which one would you pick up?
I know that lo pro edges and edges (for ibanez) are good. But even they go out of tune more easyly than kahlers'. I have plans to get my own guitar built. So, i must decide well. Now, my decision is edge7 or lo pro edge7 (mostly lo pro edge7) But i want my guitar has a tremolo unit, floating type. Moreover i want it to be in tune well, especially on bending... Shortly i need experinces, dudes... |

Kahler. Never played on one. But the fact that they are universal for lefties and righties is enough for me

Go for the lo-pro with a tremol-no. I've never played the new kahlers but the old ones I have played were more difficult to set up, but that could be because of how familar I am with the ibanez trems.
Have you thought about the OFR7?

OFR all the way. If you want it to stay in tune, anyway.

I'm a big fan of Kahler from way back, but even I have to admit that an OFR is more stable. The big strike against Kahler is that it is not double-locking. Steinberger, which has a similar cam design, solved this problem with double ball ends.
Kahler is definately more stable than anything Ibanez makes, short of the ZRF.

I've had quite a few years worth of experience with both. Absolutely hands down I'd choose a Kahler. The cam design has a much smoother feel than a knife edge. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for 7 and 8 string Kahler availability, which is supposed to happen this year.

My Edge trems never go out of tune, and I've owned an OFR and a Floyd Pro. Kahler was a neat design, but I wouldn't want one.
I remember having to solder my friend's string wraps on his BCRich because we couldn't get the reinforced GHS strings for his Kahler. |

Kahlers require less routing in the guitar, so a kahler equipped guitar usually has a fuller and more woody tone compared to one with a floyd or something similar. The range is pretty much the same on both systems, but the kahler has less resistance and smoother feel when moving the bar.
With the stringlocks closed and a well cut nut, the stability of a kahler is the same as an OFR, but it's so much easier to work with. I'd choose Kahlers over FR in most cases, but they are very expensive and there are almost no guitars that come stock with them. |

Didn't later Kahlers also have Floyd-style locking nuts with integrated string retainers? (Or did those come only with Kahler's Floyd-licensed trems?)
I had a Lado with a Kahler for years, and it was super-smooth, and diving or pulling up didn't change the string height in relation to the pickups, which is another huge benefit of the Kahler design. But man, did i ever get sick of soldering all my plain ball-ends. |
