Interesting stuff ![]() The world is mad, totally mad ![]() Washington, DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007. The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approx. 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After 3 minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule. 4 minutes later: the violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.. 6 minutes: A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again. 10 minutes: A 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly. 45 minutes: The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32. 1 hour: He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition. No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100. This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities. The questions raised: in a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context? One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made.... How many other things are we missing?

Awesome stuff, I love reading about this kind of thing. I like to think I'm pretty keyed in, and not just because I listen to street musicians more than most! I was always taught to constantly ask questions and always look beyond the face value of everything. I like to think its got me on a good path in life.

Its the proof that we live in a world dictated by money and nobody has the time to think about anything else because they are all turned into zombies because they must catch the subway to not arrive late at work.......
This is why real artists hate the word ''money'', sure its great to make a decent living and to get paid for your work etc.... But when you actually realise what this does to humanity its pretty shocking... You can also hear the way he plays, I mean anybody which is a musician would stop and listen. |

I personally appreciate beauty in music whenever I can.
The fact is, when you're rushing for work or trying to catch a train, you don't have time to stop and listen no matter how much you may like it. Some people don't enjoy classical anyway and wouldn't appreciate it regardless. I think it's an interesting experiment, but the question is moot. Ever noticed how some people are real dicks on the internet, but when they post something involving their band, they make the effort to be nice? Funny that... |

I've photographed and met a few interesting buskers, I try to spare a little for them and at least give them some time. Some are more talented than any other musicians I've seen.
And some just odd...

$32/hour sounds nice to me!
Seriously though, this is sad. I also wondered how I'd act in this situation. I've passed street musicians in the past and if their playing is good enough, I will stop and show them that I recognize them. For example, I had no idea who Harry Parry was but he intrigued the hell out of me when he came up to me (1996 or 97 on my random road trip). I gave him $5. ɹıɐ-lǝq pǝllɐɔ uʍoʇ ɐ ɟo ǝɔuıɹd ǝɥʇ ǝɯɐɔǝq ı ʍoɥ noʎ llǝʇ ll,ı ǝɹǝɥʇ ʇɥƃıɹ ʇıs ʇsnɾ ǝʇnuıɯ ɐ ǝʞɐʇ oʇ ǝʞıl p,ı puɐ uʍop ǝpısdn pǝuɹnʇ 'pǝddılɟ ʇoƃ ǝɟıl ʎɯ ʍoɥ ʇnoqɐ llɐ ʎɹoʇs ǝɥʇ sı sıɥʇ ʍou OH GOD WHY AM I TELLING YOU THIS - DDDorian

I don't know how much he would normally expect to earn, but yeh $32, which would be about £15, for an hour's work is pretty good to me. Ok I know that might not average out to that over the course of a day.
While I do see the point they are making, what bothers me about this is that there's an assumption that there's an objective idea of what's 'good' and who 'the best musician in the world' is, that if people don't appreciate it then they must be 'wrong'. Furthermore, music, especially classical music, takes time to appreciate. I know that a lot of my favourite music took time for me to get into, some of it I didn't even like at first. Expecting people to suddenly stop in the street and realise 'my god, this is the greatest violinist in the world!' is absurd. |

Thank you for the story, Patrick. I often write about these sorts of things (the subject of living in the moment and appreciating beauty, especially), so I'm greatly interested in these sorts of experiments.

There is a time and place for things.
I mean, if Liz Vicious is gettin nailed at a Metro Station, are people going to stop and say "Wow, this is one of the hottest porn stars ever getting nailed; I better appreciate this beauty instead of going to work!" ? |
