Why are bands so flakey!?!??!

Band I'm in set up a show on the 16th like 2 or 3 weeks ago and we had 5 local bands to start out with all people we know.

We decided to keep tabs on everyone as time progressed to make sure everyone was still going to be able to play the show, and after badgering 2 of the bands nonstop and them never getting an answer the one says they cant and the other says there's a 50/50...

I go *the hell is 50/50!?* and we badger them some more and they say they cant play.

Both of them knew they couldn't play well before we got into hardcore badgering them about it though... and neither one of them felt the need to come tell us asap and probably wouldn't have let us know at all until the day of the show when we would be calling them up to ask where the .... they were...

Why must people be so flaky!? Especially people we freaking know personally for years!!!

I guess that was more of a rhetorical question but I can sympathise.

Doing a music performance course at my college last year showed me how many people lack real dedication when it comes to practicing as well as performing.

I've never experienced it so bad until I moved here to the Pacific Northwest. They even have a term for it, "The Northwest Freeze" or "The Seattle Freeze". .... if people will follow through on anything, follow up on a phone call or call back on message left. Its like the an entire section of the county that functions strictly on small talk. I've been here two years now and made almost no friends, and not for lack of trying or being a shut in.

Haha! Yup. I am no stranger to the freeze and I'm probably guilty of it myself to an extent, but that's because I've lived here all my life. I wasn't aware of the "freeze" until someone explained it to me and I immediately knew exactly what they were describing, lol. In my defense though, I am a very punctual person and I am true to my word. Like everyone else around here though, I'm not very good at opening up to new people. I am not opposed to it, it's just not in my nature.

I didn't use musicians because I knew most these guys before any of us even picked up an instrument and they act that way.

I have other people I know who will say their going to come chill a week or two in advance so I clear the day to chill with said person and they never show up or say a damned thing. Not even a courtesy call.

With friends not showing up to chill though its no big deal I'll find something else to do, with bands not showing up its like not showing up to work and I'm the asshole here to the venue.

and boy am I happy I don't live in seattle xD

Everyone wants to be a rock star but very few people will genuinely work for it. It has to come easy for most people, or else they will walk away.

I used to jam with this one drummer, he always said how he wanted to "be a famous drummer" and this or that, I'd show up to jam, guess what he wants to do?

We've had a fair few gigs where bands have pissed on us at the last minute. One about a month ago was one. We'd been booked to support. Comes to 2 weeks before gig, we get in touch to make sure we're still on, gear situations etc... They reply saying everything's fine.
Come's to a week before the gig, we're checking their myspace, and there's no date for us playing when there was the week before. We check the venues website, no mention of it either.
Gets to 2 days before, we get a hold of the venue and they say "Oh, that's been cancelled for weeks"

Our drummer also had a big rant last week, talking about getting more professional etc...
And then we go into the studio. "So, you been practising, you know getting the used to the click with this song"

"Oh no, lost my metronome afew months ago"...

my favorite thing is when ive booked a show, and show up on the date and they tell me the show has been cancelled or the bar is closed or whatever.

this has happened at least 5 times.

i love that its a surprise now what someone follows through.

i've got to say, there are some insanely flaky bands out there, who just won't show the .... up to any gigs, or will show up waaay too late.

then there are the shitty arrangers/venues that just doesn't communicate with the bands at all, and you just sort of have to guess your way into it.

usually when bands go to play at "lotsa local bands" type gigs here, they have to learn about it by word of mouth, then find out who knows the most, then call that person to ask if they know how to join in, and then you finally get to the guy arranging it, and then you're as good as booked. sure, you won't be turned down for gigs, but it's like the arrangers don't care if there are any actual bands at the gig. of course, some of the arrangers go out there and find the bands, which is great.

then there are the larger "official" gigs, with lots of money invested in it, arranged by the local government. they make it seem like a "proper" gig, but you never know what the hell is going on, and have to ask the "biggest" band, because they get their dicks sucked and balls cuddled by the guys arranging the whole thing. they don't tell the other bands what the schedules are, when rehearsals and sound check is happening, what gear is available, what the rules are for bringing gear, etc.

even getting yourself into the damn thing is hard, because you have to email the one guy responcible for the whole arranging of the gig, and then you need to find out what his email is. this is not readily available stuff, so you have to ask people or use google.

the best gig i've played, as far as planning and integrity goes, was a little gig in a pub, warming up for a larger thrash metal band. not a whole lot of fuzz going on at all, and it all went easily and smoothly. yay.

Haha that just finished happening to me before, our friends band told us to hit up this one arranger to try and get in on a show, we hit this person up and they ask for our info and then never bother to get back to us.

then like a week before the show decide to tell us they're sending tickets N that we're playing the show... way too late... They sent my friends band the tickets like a month ahead of time...

Right now its fun just trying to find 2 bands to fill in the drop out spots...

We had like 6 potential bands we could ask, 3 of which already said they couldn't... we're pending on 2 more but who knows if either will make it...

If any of you guys live around central jersey and want to play a small nothing fancy show on the 16th at finnigans on 130 hit a brotha up

Promoters/venues/bars are even more flaky (booking show, promoting, paying bands, over booking shows)

Some bands we have played with here in SD have canceled on us late minute for random reasons (car breaks down, too drunk) we just ask another band (if there's time) and move on.

I would kill a ............... car breaks down is barely an excuse considering there should be more than 1 person with a car in the band and worst case if I can I'll go get them myself...

but too drunk!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!? No words... no words at all.

Then again I know 2 separate guitarists that are always high 24/7 and are completely unreliable so I get to see them bounce around from band to band getting kicked out of all of them for being worthless because they can't even not get high 1 day to show up for practice.

Musicians are inherently flaky. Put 4 or 5 of them in the same room together, and you've got maximum flakiness.

We've had a couple of situations like this that springs to mind.

First was a newly signed Earache Records band. They were scheduled to play a local Colchester venue, but then seemingly disappeared about a month before the show, completely uncontactable. Instead of the venue chasing it, I started chasing it up, and I eventually, a week before the show, got a call off the band's management company saying that the contract between them and the band had been declared void, and the band were the most incompetent and unprofessional people this certain person at the management company had ever worked for. We were then also left to fill the slots left open at that gig, and we ended up headlining.

Second one was us getting confirmed in a support slot for CkY, for their 'new album launch party'. When checking the dates, we saw the album was set to be released a month after the date of the gig. My jubious nature then kicked in. Lo and behold, we never supported CkY, we played to about 7 people, and supported a shitty soft rock band.

I caught up with the CkY guys when they played my town about 6 weeks later and them and their management had never even heard of the venue, let alone spoken to them about booking anything.

I as an individual am quite flaky, but I blame my bandmates.
The only reason I can think of for flakiness is lack of determination and commitment, but of coarse for me, its fear(strange sensation it is).
