What the hell makes that happen between the diet Coke and the Mentos?

as mythbusters has proven it, it has to do with the way the mentos are made and the interaction of the ingredients between the diet coke and the mentos. i watched that very episode.

the surface of a mentos is grainy, so the ingredients of the diet coke can get to the ingredients of the mentos. i can't remember exactly what ingredients from each one acted this way but it is cool. adam did a test to see which ingredients foamed this way and he had pure caffeine and some other stuff and it was caffeine and something else that did this. very cool indeed. mythbusters is all about doing the myths, legends, urban legends and such to see if they really are true or whatever. good show to watch.

I have a problem with mythbusters, which I believes culminates in the opening credits; They have hardly any scientific training or method at all and I'm pretty sure half the time they don't know what they're on about. For example in the episode(s) about whether or not things would get sucked out of a plane if a small hole was made they did a shitload of tests involving smoke inside a cabin and the wind outside the plane sucking it out...not ONCE as I recall did they mention PRESSURE DIFFERENCE between the cabin and atmosphere.

Also in the opening credits there is a formula - A = 2 pi r^2. The area of a circle is pi r^2. the Circumference of a circle is 2pi r. 2 pi r^2 isn't the formula for anything.

The mentos stuff is cool though.

Caffeine and aspartame (artificial sweetener). Adding either of these to straight soda water heightened the reaction.

Adam and Jamie are movie special effects artists, with a background that consists of physical rigs and stunts. So, if the myth is, say, the one about the chaining the axle of a car to a lamp post, and seeing if it pulls off when you drive away, they know exactly what they're doing. The plane myth was more about the behavior of gases at varying pleasures, so of course it was more difficult for them. How many scientists do you know that have the entire spectrum covered?

Try to keep in mind that it is entertainment. They don't work in a lab.

Try to keep in mind that it is entertainment. They don't work in a lab.

In fact, they actually do view fan message boards and often revisit myths because fans find flaw in their scientific method from time to time and suggest other ways that should have been tried. The other team of people (Grant, Cari, etc.) seem to be more science oriented, but usually get stuck with the crappy experiments.
