I think the basic gist of software piracy use can be summed up as follows: software businesses create software to make money. If you use that software, you pay for it, like any other product you use. If you don't pay for it, you should at least have the decency not to talk about it or advocate that others also steal the product.
That would be true if it weren't for companies putting software out for free like the 7zip software you use, or Audicity, or multitudes of other software out there. Reaper is clearly intended to be paid for, but they offer a 30 day trial that doesn't expire. If someone doesn't pay for it, Cockos has enabled that situation to happen by not restricting the trial to the time limit it says it has. If a company does something like that, I do not see it as piracy. It'd be like giving someone a car for 30 days then saying, "Hey, you should pay for that, but we're not going to limit your free use of it, so you can technically keep it as long as you want." The only motivation for someone to buy it would be to remove the splash screen at the start, or to support the company if that person really liked what they had to offer. I am not going advocate piracy of the program, but I'm also not going to fault someone if they choose to keep Reaper for free.

Except that continuing to use Reaper after 30 days violates the Terms of service you agree to when you install, regardless of if they physically lock you out or not.

Just because someone doesn't lock their doors at night doesn't give anyone the right to rob them, it just makes it easier to do so. Its still theft.

Regardless of this side discussion, good on the OP for manning up and making an apology.

I don't really accept that analogy. It would be more like being able to stay in a house for 30 days, then when the 30 days are up, while you agreed to the terms of service to not continue using it, you know for a fact that no one is going to kick you out or even mention it to you ever again, except that when you come home everyday, there's a piece of paper on your door saying that your house trial is up. The builder of the house gives you this option to continue living there without paying. You are not robbing anyone, but you are taking advantage of the company's choice to not kick you out of the house after the time is up, perhaps their "generosity".

It doesn't matter that they don't enforce it. The user agreed to the terms of use and it shouldn't matter if anyone enforces it or not. People of worth don't need enforcement to make the right decision and uphold their agreements.

Taking advantage of someone who is too nice to do anything in return to you is a dick move, pure and simple.

RandyRhoads123 would save himself loads of typing if he just typed out his actual reasoning: "It's not wrong if I don't get caught." combined with intentionally misunderstanding the terms of use.
Out of curiosity do you also take advantage of generous people in everyday life for not expressly forbidding you to do something?
The relevant parts of the pop up screen. (Capitalization theirs)

REAPER IS NOT FREE.
It is a paid product just like one you buy in a box from a store.
If you use it for more than 30 days you are required to purchase a license.

REAPER licenses are very reasonably priced.
We offer discounts for personal non-commercial use and for very small businesses.

We are showing you this message, instead of crippling this evaluation version of REAPER, because we do not feel that the technological enforcement of licensing policy is in the best interest of our customers.
Within the pop-up screen there is also a link to the page where you can purchase a license key.

The actual license and user agreement part of the pop up screen only reinforces the fact that you are required to pay and by choosing to use Reaper you agree to either purchase or discontinue your use of Reaper after 30 days. You and many others just intentionally misread things.
Considering a non-commercial license is $60 there is no excuse not to buy it if you intend to keep using it. Can't afford it? Get a job. To young for a job? Mow some lawns. Stop being a scumbag and looking for loopholes because you will ruin things in the long run.

In case you have not read my other responses, I do own a license for Reaper and no, I don't take advantage of people in real life. I just don't understand the reasoning to not cripple the software after the trial ends. If they are so adamant about it not being a free product and about it being "required" to purchase after 30 days, then why is it that they still allow the program to run after the trial? It just doesn't make sense. They say it "wouldn't be in the best interest of their users", but the users wouldn't be paying at that point and can decide whether or not they want the product after the trial. I don't think letting the trial go longer is going to encourage more people to buy it, unless they're relying on some sort of kneejerk emotional appeal as seen in this thread.

Randy, the fact that you can't understand their reasoning doesn't make them wrong. The fact that a lot of forum members have stood up for the TOS agreement shows that there *is* understanding from others.

As for me, I see the red rep bar and, combined with your arguments about all this, and I know that I wouldn't curently sell to you or buy from you in the Classifieds.

It's a community thing, as little as you might be worried about it.

Weird, though. I looked at your user page just now, and saw that in spite of your saying (in this topic) that you don't care about rep, you started another topic saying that rep system is useless and should be terminated.

The Rep System Should Be Terminated

----

I believe Darren pointed out that no one had more rep than they deserve, and rep is often a good indication of someone's standing in the community. It's sad that 75% of your rep is negative. Hopefully you'll decide that arguing for someone to not get paid isn't the best way to fit in, and you'll become a valued contributing member of SS.org over time.

Here's hoping. Good luck!

If you don't care enough to research your own question, why should anyone else care more?

Hey in OP defence

a) he's young, and
b) if we're going to nitpick about licences, one could argue that Repear is Donationware, or 'nagware'

Donationware - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That being said. Why not hear from the creator of Repear himself?

Ask Justin Frankel

The guy made Winamp (you learn something new every day!)

p.s. I wonder how many people in the recording sub forum use repear and copies of superior drummer they 'sourced'

I'm fairly neutral here, but I read the initial thread and I don't feel the kid here deserved the flak, or should be made to feel like he needed to apologise, especially when he obviously doesn't really know much about the various shareware structures in place.

Repear is great anyway, I'm sure we can all agree to that.

"Everybody's doing it," has never been a good excuse to do something immoral and/or illegal.

I actually agree with this. I didn't partake in the neg-rep bombing myself, and I agree that the response was a bit harsh. However, an important lesson was learned as a result, and the kid showed good character by using the negative reactions of others as a lens to re-examine his views on the matter.
