It's so horrible you can only be in there for 45 mins, and you would have to sit cause its so disorienting?

I wonder if its that terrifying to go deaf

Even cooler, they're using dumb-holes, kinda like this, to work on the latest theories for black holes.

It doesn't make sense to me to put astronauts in those though, if it's meant to be some sort of training. Train them for what..? Or perhaps they selected astronauts because of their training.

Yeah, I'd probably kill myself. My tinnitus is acute but it already ....ing annoys me. I wish there was a cure or something.

Maybe to recreate the overall sound of the vacuum of space? That's my best guess. As stated in the article I guess they wait for them to begin hallucinating and then see how well they can work through it.

Astronauts never experience the soundlessness of space. On space walks they are in their suits, the suits have a contained atmosphere and about a dozen different fans spinning at high speeds.

That said, the guys at NASA are a lot smarter than an Aerospace Engineering student.

Actually most of us musicians would probably be driven crazy by the ear ringing more than the silence lol.

edit; factory and machine shop work don't help with the ear ringing either.

I'm not entirely sure I believe that the longest anyone had lasted was 45 minutes. Especially not of that record was set by a reporter there to cover the story.

Standing in one is the weirdest feeling, to hear your internal sounds so clear is a bit disorientating to say the least. A couple of people had to leave due to nausea when we first got introduced to it at my uni.
