Well this is alarming...(NSFW)

Filthy India Photos, Chinese Netizen Reactions – chinaSMACK

Some, if not all, of this article is really jarring. To see a country with such rich culture from the outside like this is really saddening.

It blows my mind that some of this remains largely unnoticed.

Thoughts?

This isn't that surprising to be honest. The Ganges is one of the most polluted rivers in the world and it's basin is the most heavily populated river basin in the entire world. It's a well known fact that bodies and the ashes of the cremated (or remains of the partially cremated) are sent into the Ganges River. People bathe in that water, they drink it, use it to clean dishes, brush their teeth, industrial waste is flushed into it, etc.

NSFW slipped my mind, thanks for the mod edit.

You always hear about the types of pollution that happen in the river, but seeing it is another story. Some of the pictures are just appalling. The fact that it doesn't bother these people and they continue to brush their teeth with this water and drink from it is just mind-blowing.

I've seen and heard about this a million times in a million different documentaries, threads, etc, and I always found it unsettling. However, finding something as extremely graphic as this post has really made me feel startled. I truly appreciate the fact that the people there live in such a "natural" way, as the article put it, but, at the same time, it's hard to comprehend the subhuman sanitation conditions that they live in. It puts me in a sort of predicament of whether I should condone of that way of living or not...

It's interesting in a way, however, seeing all this. When I visited Sri Lanka last summer it wasn't like that at all. It was actually pretty clean (aside from Colombo, the capital, which is a pretty dirty place, like many other big, 5,000,000+ people cities in underdeveloped nations). It's a fact, though, that Sri Lanka does not suffer from the extreme over-population that India does (although it's on the rise at alarming rates), and it has a different prevalent culture and religion (Buddhism), which I feel changes the way people choose to live. Still, I would have figured that both countries' culture would be similar, with them being so close to each other and all... I've lived among people from the Indian subcontinent for a while now (given that the country where I currently reside has an IMMENSE amount of immigrants from said places), but I still have so much to learn...

Holy. Shit.
I mean I knew it was like this to some degree but having faces and images to put to the idea really brings it home.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how theres so many people there.
I'd think with the filth many of them would drop dead of disease.

I found this in the comment section to be alarming as well.

"Actually, this is exactly how America does it, using violence to beat the Indians [Native Americans] to death, pushing the Asian, African, and poor out into the country, running the poor white people into the surrounding outskirts of the cities. America’s police are even more terrible than China’s chengguan. If you’re within two meters of a police officer, you have to raise your hands, otherwise American police have the right to shoot you dead."

That's why India is on my "no travel" list. Feces and corpses on the street ....ing turns me off. And I'm from Thailand. I'm not a stranger to dirty neighborhood either, but India is in its own class!

But to be fair I'm sure the richer/newer cities like Hyderabad would be much cleaner. Things are on the way up for Indians with their economic growth and modernization.

I think one thing to remember is that this is not meant to be a representation of the entirety of India, focusing mainly on the pollution of the Ganges River and that these pictures were collected over the course of two months, however when you read the headline for the article "Filthy India Photos" that's all your brain will remember when you look at the pictures.

Speaking from experience, Pakistan is generally dirtier, like he said-but at least bodies are buried, there's nothing like the Ganges as Islamic law forbids it. Really is eye-opening to see it in pictures though.

first...the article is VERY bias. second, the article is very bias.

yes, all that does happen. all that does happen world wide. the article said that it happens in pakistan and bangladesh, or they are far worse. i'm not sure what happens in bangladesh, but pakistan is a mainly islamic country, and as such, they dont share customs that hindus do. as such, bodies are buried and not dumped into the rivers. at the same time, islam also suggests use of rivers, as use one side of the river to drink, a lil down below to do wodu (sacred washing of limbs before praying, to be in the state of 'paak'), then a lil further down to bathe, and then a lil further down to do your bathroom related stuff.

as for the toilet situation, believe it or not, that is how most of the world does it. the only exception, most of europe and north america.

likewise, about 90% of the world starts their day by having fish for breakfast. exceptions, most of europe (france excluded) and north america. culture and history are different.

also, as mentioned in several posts after that, india isn't just death in rivers and people pooing all over. the article, all it talked about was how disgusting india is and blah blah blah. but then again, what diamond isn't found in a coal mine?

india is full of other beauties that are not included in the article. what, the person lived in india for 2 months, and from the pictures, it seems, he/she only spent 2 days away from that area, and the rest of the 2 months in that area.

every place in the world has their own beauty and culture that should be respected as such. if you are going into a new world, then look at their world free of culture-relativism. no one culture is superior to the other, they are just different.

That whole article is really weird. You would think the author would have like five or six pictures of dead bodies to drive the point home, but he took like 50....I mean what the ..... Does India have major disease issues?
Also I'm glad our western religions/cultures don't think it's ok to smear shit on public steps and walk animals through streets where they shit constantly and no one cleans it up so the streets always smell like shit.

Yes that part of India has major disease issues. Much of it comes from the massive amount of pollution.

Their religion doesn't condone "smearing shit on public steps" as you put it.

Not long ago we (western cultures) were throwing our excrement out of windows onto the sidewalks below while horses were defecating and urinating in the streets.

In 1880 15,000 horse carcasses were removed from the streets of New York City (yes, just New York city, not the entire state) and the massive amounts of manure piling up in the streets coupled with the flies it attracted caused major health issues.
