I have a strange dislike for the letter 'z' (zed for all you North Americans ) being used instead of 's'. Example: 'nationalization' as opposed to 'nationalisation'. Man, I even found it difficult to type it spelt with a 'z'. I know it's by no means incorrect but it bugs me

Oh, and when people in Scotland say 'filim' instead of 'film' and 'i-run' instead of 'iron'.

And knowing one kind of seemed to help reinforce the rules of the other for me except for the fact that certain things are expressed "backwards" in one language with respect to the other.

Who does?

I know the US Government rates it, along with the other Romance languages, as a Category 1 language, with 1 being the "easiest" of 4 ascending difficulty categories. As you pointed out, there are many similarities between English and the Romance languages such as Spanish, especially with vocabulary, so native English speakers have a much easier time learning it than, say, Chinese, which is similar neither grammatically nor lexicologically.

I'm not meaning this as a sleight against Spanish in any way, mind. Hell, my BA is in Spanish. It's just weird to hear that "people" consider it difficult. Then again, I'm a nerd for learning languages, so it's hard for me to grasp when anybody complains about learning any language .

If anybody is curious about the rating of languages: The Defense Language Institute, which is the school the military sends servicemembers to for the purpose of language instruction, rates the difficulty of the languages for English speakers in order to judge whether or not a given individual will be able to succeed in that language based on the the score they received on the Defense Language Aptitude Battery (DLAB). The DLAB is essentially a test where the taker is "taught" a fake language with its own grammatical concepts to see how well the taker takes to concepts and constructs unfamiliar to an English speaker. The better a person does on the DLAB, the higher category a language they're permitted to take.

The categories, with some samples of the languages they entail, are as follows:

Category 1: Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian.

Category 2: German, Indonesian.

Category 3: Russian, Hebrew, Farsi, Thai.

Category 4: Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean.

A bit OT, I know, but .... it. I have nothing better to do .

The kids who struggled with Korean or the other CAT 3/4 languages ended up getting remanded to Spanish or rolling out of the program altogether.

I was there in '02-'03 for Arabic. People that struggled in that usually either rolled into Hebrew or Farsi first, then Spanish if they struggled with those, too.

And yeah, you had to try harder to NOT get any ass at DLI than you did to get any. We both know your marriage is an anomaly for having lasted this long though, hahaha. DLI marriages don't usually end... well. Then again, my parents actually met at DLI back in the day, and they're still married 33 years later, so I know it's possible. All I ended up with was a lengthy relationship with a girl who ended up cheating on me...

I'm not bitter...

I couldn’t believe that I could actually understand what I was reading. The phenominal power of the human mind, according to research at Cambridge University, it doesn’t matter what order the letters in a word are, the only important thing is that the first and last letter be in the right place.

The rest can be a total mess and you can still read it without a problem. This is because the human mind does not read every letter by itself, but the word as a whole. Amazing, eh? And I always thought spelling was important! And for those of you with more time on your hands than others, you will notice that not only are most of the words a mess but some of them are completely misspelt as well!
Wrong...
TIL that spelling does matter and the "Cambridge University" study paragraph is a trick. I feel stupid!

The thing that seems to irk me the most is that most of the errors I see on a regular basis would be caught and fixed if people would just take a few seconds to proof-read what they type before they hit that 'Submit' or 'Send' button.

Sometimes I let my longer posts here stew before I post them, while I take the time to read through them over and over again in order to make sure they're adequately expressing whatever point it is I'm trying to make.

Occasionally, I end up deleting entire posts without submitting them, which I'm sure is more often than not for the best.

Also, with all the native spell-checking tools that exist these days, I do find it troubling that spelling mistakes seem to be increasing across the net, rather than decreasing. Note: I almost misspelled "across", but the native spell check caught it.

Some mistakes are a lot more common among native speakers than among non-native ones. I, for instance, could never grasp how could anyone type should of instead of should have.

Years of practice posting in forums, though, made me commit the same very mistake I so much despised. The phonetics are similar, yes, but when you're unfamiliar with the language, you somehow see them as entirely different things. Weird shit

My signal path: Gibson LP Studio > TS-9 > Lifesound Horizon (Dual Recto + Fender Bassman clone) > POD X3 Live (loop, fx only) > Lifesound custom 2x12" loaded with Eminence Legends

It's only coincidence if you don't know anything about the evolution of language, particularly the evolution and spread of Indo-european languages. As the languages become further removed from English (which is from England, not America, mind ) and the languages that affected its evolution, they become harder for an English speaker to learn. Note that all of the categories that are sub-4 are all or mostly indo-european languages, then once you hit cat-4 they're ALL non-indo-european. The geographic distribution of those languages just happens to lean far more heavily to the east than to the west. Distance from the US had absolutely nothing to do with it.

I realize you were most likely not serious, but I felt like rambling anyways.

EDITED FOR OMITTED WORDS.
