Post-whoring
Time to vent a bit:
When people start gratuitously posting just to get their post count up, it really starts to annoy me. I use the "new posts" search on the forum as my main entry point (my sevenstring.org bookmark is actually http://www.sevenstring.org/forum/search.php?do=getnew ) so when the "new posts" list starts filling up with a bunch of useless junk, it pushes the list of new posts out to 3 and 4 pages... and i visit several times a day. The result of that is that i skim the list much more quickly, more time is spent sifting through the crap to find good posts rather than reading actual content, and i potentially miss really good information and insight. I've been here a LONG time, and my post count is a fraction of what some of you guys have accumulated in a few months. Can we at least try and make an effort to keep post-whoring to a minimum to keep the signal-to-noise ratio from degenerating? I've abandoned other forums in the past (jemsite, projectguitar) because the amount of nonsense started far exceeding the amount of good content, and it just became to time consuming and laborious to weed through the junk to find the good stuff. I'd hate to have to cut down on my ss.org consumption for the same reason. Post counts are bullshit. Stop paying attention to them. Post quality, not quantity. (Unless you're Donnie and Shannon posting more drunken escapades... )That is all. |

Yeah, we're starting to get a bit sick of it too - I think we've had an appreciation thread for half the smileys on the board in the last week, and a few "let's all post-whore" threads to boot.
I mean, god knows I of all people can't come down on someone for posting a lot, but I mean, the majority of what I post is at least content, not disembodied smiley faces - this is a pretty damned cool site, so how about we try to keep the content-to-crap ratio pretty high, oh? Quote:

Screw closing them. I say they get deleted. So that the posts go away and people start to realise that posting a useless thread won't get them anywhere.
The "Last person to post wins" and "Say something about the forumer above you" threads both come to mind. Though I will admit that I have taken part (albeit, not to a great extent) in these threads aswell. POOF! |

I've done my share of stupid posts. But, look at when I joined and my total post # and I'm on all the time!
For the most part I question every reply I write up and if I should post it. I don't know how many times I've written up a reply just to end up not posting it. Theres one person who just joined and almost has 1000 posts. [action=Firebeard]will not name names[/action] Sæmunder Firebeard |

However, Chris' content-to-crap ratio is also, as Drew said, pretty high. Chris posts a ton of good shit every day. There's some forumers here that only post in off-topic and have few-if-any posts in any of our other music forums on the site. OT is for the nonense and general community bullshit, and I'm cool with people ....in' around in there and posting (for the most part) anything and everything. What's getting out of hand is when I post threads in music forums, or the site forums, and the threads turn into post-whore fests completely unrelated to the topic. That's what we'll be moderating a bit heavier. I want to stress that I don't want people to feel like they can't post silly shit in OT - that's what it's for. We're just going to be straight up deleting threads that aren't music related in the music forums. Amp: 6505+ / Recto 4x12s Rack: Axe-Fx II / HD1221s |

Yeah, I agree with darren. I actually would like if the appreciation threads got deleted. Some people might lose 100 or more posts. I'd lose like 3.
Darren, all good points, dude! Post whoring has gotten out of hand! IT MUST STOP NOW! ![]() I've noticed that the definition of "post whoring" differs from forum to forum. On an old forum I used to be on, people with over 1000 posts were considered "post whores" and one guy who had around 1,800 posts (and had been on the site for almost 2 years) was considered the biggest "post whore." Kinda makes you think... (sigh) |

100%The only long thread I like posting ALOT in is the "Song Title Game" thread, I'll admit, I have like 500+ posts in that thread. It's a fun game though IMO. Those other threads are cool too I guess, after all, I did post in them. ![]() I agree with you though, Darren, we post whores should cut down on the useless nonsense posting.

I agree with all of this. The post-whoring has become really annoying to me. Usually when it gets out of hand and there's nothing worth reading or responding to I'll [gasp] play guitar. I feel like I win in this situation
![]() Maybe we should implement something where when someone is clearly post-whoring (say >50 posts in a day), they get a one-day ban on posting. Except we won't call it a ban, we'll call it a "you need to stop posting so much and get back to playing guitar" break. |

Seriously, yeah, it was kinda funny at first, but it's gone a tad far. Division - American metal that doesn't suck. Much. Even on Facebook, and Soundclick might eventually be updated, too.

I have no problem with the contest/game threads. I have no problem with whoring in OT. Just keep the whoring here and not in the music forums, and I'm a happy camper like Chris Holmes.
