lessons are a great way to start. i never took one, and while i wouldn't consider myself a bad guitarist, i don't really think of myself as that good of one

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.

Welcome @board, dude!

My suggestion for you is to pay a serious effort to quickly build a minimal musical perception on the guitar and reasonable finger strength. Use the 7 greek modes with alternate picking for that. It will be a great start. Take at least 2 hours a day of playing it and play a with a metronome to make sure you won't go out of rythm. Simply learn and memorize each of them and then play them all in a row many times, in a tempo comfortable for you.
Don't forget to speed up the tempo once your playing at a certain speed becomes easy, fluid and clean.

I know cool youtube lessons for greek modes, but in portuguese only, anyway, if you want to give it a try:

Rock on. An die arbeit!

I don't know, learning modes and theory and a bunch of crap like that IMO isn't the best way to start, because when you first start you want the instant gratification of playing riffs that you love. Learning theory is awesome for the long run, it just doesn't have that instant gratification that I think is important for new guitar players so they stick with the instrument. Just my 2 cents though.
