Classical guitar
Anyone here formally studied this?
Just curious as I'm currently practicing on the classical again now exams are over and it's time to prepare for an assessment at GI. At the moment I'm just practicing IM scales with freestrokes and reststrokes (combinding that with scale singing), arpeggios and tremolo technique. Also got some nice easy classical pieces to improve my shitty reading skills (I get by for what I do on my own, but it's nowhere near a professional level). Might start serious lessons over the summer, as I was going to start classical piano again as well. Any thoughts or advice? |

I like playing that style, but i've never formally studiest it
![]() I think the best place to look is Eyethor Thorlaksson's site. he has all kinds of PDF's of classical pieces uploaded. Yeah, I've dabbled in it too. What kind of classical do you own? I've got a Takamine C-132S, more than enough for my skills lol. Anyways, this site has a great forum with a lot of knowledgable players: http://forum.guitarsalon.com/

I've been through the Bachelor of Music program at the University of British Columbia (Canada) majoring in composition with classical guitar as my main instrument. Had 4 years of juries (playing exams) and my audition piece was Asturias (Leyenda) by Albeniz. It's a really fun piece to play!
I'd highly recommend reading & using Aaron Shearer's music reading, visualizing, & memorization methods explained in his book: Learning the Classic Guitar (Part 2). I wish I had known about his methods before I started my degree - I would have learned all my pieces much more quickly and efficiently. |

Well I play at Classical Conservatory around here and it looks to me like you are on the right track (working on all the classical guitar technics).
If you want some advice: Focus on your TONE. We always say that tone is in the fingers and this is specially true with classical guitar playing. Play easy pieces ensuring that each note has a beautiful sound and you will have the respect of any exam commission, even if your technique is not great. DO NOT let your fingernails make percussive sounds when you play the notes. You DO keep your fingernails long right? ![]()

Tone is one of the main things I'm working on right now. I used to have super-long nails all over my right hand, but nowadays they're a lot shorter, as I prefer the tone of using a combination of flesh and nail, and plus I do a lot of 8 finger playing. Got some nice easy baroque pieces, that I'm working on.
