Dumple Stilzkin will become famous soon enough
Whats the difference between?

Tremelo picking and just using straight fast alternating picking? I use alt only.

Trem picking = playing as fast as you can without regards to timing and tempo
Fast Alternating picking = playing fast, but it time with the tempo with an up-down-up-down picking technique.

I consider myself a trem picker, but I certainly pay attention to timing and tempo.

I understood trem picking to be playing one note with several consecutive pickstrokes before moving to another, rather than playing one note per pickstroke like a traditional scale run...? Sorta like some of the stuff in "Eruption" before the tapping...?

Different notes have nothing to do with it. Eruption is a prime example of trem picking. We're simply talking about the picking hand going as fast as it can, NOT the fretted notes themselves.

That is an excellent example of trem picking. Eddie is pretty much a master at trem picking, and you can hear it all over the place. SRV also comes to mind (listen to Little Wing).

I always thought of trem picking as continually picking one note for the length of time specified, but you were supposed to do it in time. You can trem pick in fourths, eighths, sixteenths, thirty-seconds, etc.

Badass example of trem picking:
Hypocrisy - Killing Art \m/

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

It still has to have timing though. Your description makes it sound like 100% pure sloppy wankery.

+1 - all picking, trem or otherwise, is done (if it's any good, anyhow) with some sort of regard to rhythm.
