Open G is fun!:)

Inspired by an old Rich Robinson lesson from Guitar World, I tuned my Les Paul to open G tonight and spent about an hour cranking out some funky Stones-type riffs. So much fun! It's cool to take a break from my constant diet of progginess occasionally!
Just thought I'd share...

Dude, thanks for sharing, and I'm with you, but I sorta see this one dying an untimely death around here.

Open tunings are a blast. They get lots of workout on my acoustic.

DADGAD is a personal favorite of mine (and works wonderfully with a low A, too. Probably a low G, as well, now that I think of it...)

+1 on DADGAD. I almost rely on it to much on the acoustic! Over here in the UK there's several generations of acoustic fingerstyle guys who sound virtually interchangeable due to relying on most of the standard DADGAD patterns...
Try DADEAD, DADGAE (rocks for slide) or CGDGAD as variations. I wish I had my baritone with me, as I'd like to try DADGAD taken down to B flat or A flat right now...
Have you ever heard an English guitarist called Nick Harper (son of Roy, as in 'Hats Off to Roy Harper')? Absolutely terrifying...plays steel string acoustic, but puts absurdly heavy strings on his guitar, and drops all the normal open tunings down into the baritone range. He does a lot of the Adrian Legg style tuning peg bends and tuning changes mid-song, but sounds a lot more aggressive than Legg.
Don't know why I thought of him just now...haven't heard from him in ages...

Never heard of the guy, Romeo, but he sounds like my type of player. I'll keep my ears open.

DADGAD also KILLS for big, suspended-sounding Tool-like riffs. Gorgeous tuning, I'd be seriously tempted to start a groove-oriented prog band and write in that tuning and just not solo, if I could find the musicians, lol.

Amen to DADGAD. My acoustic almost always stays in it. It's huge sounding, and makes for great Hawaiian slack key music as well.

Drew if I were in the States we'd hook it up!

That's amuzing I have an acoustic tuned to Open G right now. When playin' some Dan Fogelburg he uses that tuning on "longer"... it's pretty fun, not really metal, but fun!

The Devin Townsend-approved Open C is another great one on the acoustic, and is a little less common than D, G and DADGAD, so it's easier to break out of cliches with. Open minor tunings are ridiculously underrated as well...I occasionally play in Open G Minor, but for some reason all the music that comes out of me in the tuning is so depressing, I don't really make a habit of it. Wierd, I know...
