Advanced scale books?
I've just bought The Advanced Guitar Case Scale Book and it's a huge disappointment, it's basically 20 scales or something.
So I was wondering, does anybody have any suggestion for a books that deals with more then just the basic minor/major/modal scales? |

Slonimsky's Thesaurus is more about sequencing intervals in rising and falling patterns, and interacting intervals - not that it doesn't take scales to do that. I've been having the most fun scalewise lately with the reissue of Allan Holdsworth's 1992 Alfred Artist Series DVD. He discusses in detail how he constructed all the mathematical possibilities for synthetic scales, then discarded most of them and analyzed chords from the rest. If you take it the way I did, it's more like a open-end method than just a "play-along-with-Al" kind of thing.
(He doesn't mention that it would probably take about five years of four-hours-a-day to assimilate what he's done... )I don't actually even like his playing too much, he runs on too long without phrasing, but he's an analytic genius. He absolutely looks at scales the same way I do - the A Minor and C Major and E Phrygian and B Locrian are all the same scale, this DVD is about NEW combinations of half-steps. The flat-out coolest scale I've see in there so far is a new symmetric scale, call it half-step/half-step/whole-step. It's three half-steps in a row, then skip one, then three more, skip, then three more. D Eb E - Gb G Ab - Bb B C - D Eb E etc. You can think of it as an augmented chord, with the note above and below each chord tone. When you start building up the triads, you'll see it's a monster backdoor scale for constructing passing chords, like the regular symmetric or the whole tone scale. I've never seen this one before anywhere (and there's nine more scales I haven't even got to yet). ![]() P.S. This one: Allan Holdsworth 2008, DVD: items on eBay.com

Yeah, that is a pretty good book, I have the "thesaurus of melodic scales and patterns" it's fun play sometimes, but it's not really scales, it's more like patterns, it's hard to explain, so I'll just type stuff from the table of contents.
Tritone progression Ditone progression Sesquitone progression Whole-tone progression Semitone progression Sesquiquinquetone progression (and yes that is actually in the book )I skipped a few of the things covered, but I hope you understand the concepts covered in the book. |
