different guitars have different spots where you should rest the side of your palm in palm muting, so you just have to find that spot, and its kind of hard to explain in words, its something you should really expirement with or watch a video about

Steve Morse is a master at strict alternate picking, and he always rests his little finger - in fact he often keeps it around the volume knob, as on this video:

It's totally awkward-looking, I'm really sure he doesn't mind. Jeff Beck both keeps his little finger on the knob, and keeps the whammy bar locked in his hand - oh wait, he doesn't need a pick:

There seems to be several different ways to get music out of these things....

"I was not ever interested in the music of boys. From my youngest years, I was interested in the music of men." - Eric Clapton

They actually USE their pinky to swell the volume knob though, its not only there for support. It looks alot less awkward than when you have all three fingers on the body of the guitar.

"Beginners sometimes make the mistake of resting the 3 and 4 fingers on the guitar. Good technique is to tuck the fingers in a loose fist and rest the heel of the palm on the bridge just behind where the strings pass over the saddle. Don't be afraid to try it-makes a huge improvement in speed, accuracy and tone. And play with the tip of a heavy pick attacking at a slight angle not parallel to the string. This produces a smoother tone and the pick doesn't get hung up. "

Thanks for any help
Petrucci and countless other guitar gods wrest their 3rd and/or 4th fingers on the guitar
