So if it was B Major, it would have a very harmonious effect.

This has been reviewed in here already (I think), but I'll state it simply anyway.

You should also try the 3rd, it usually has a nice sound to it too, but may not be what you want.
If im right in what your getting at(playing a B major scale over a G major chord) this would NOT sound very harmonious, if by harmonious you mean consonant.

The notes present in a G major chords are G B D

The notes present in a B major SCALE are B,Csharp,Dsharp, E, Fsharp,G sharp,Asharp. There is only ONE sharp in the key of G. How will playing B major ever sound nice, playing both a semi tone above and below the root(G)?

If this dude is interested you shouldnt mislead him if you dont know what your on aboot. Dont mean to be rude but come on man. You dont count up semi tones(unless its a chromatic scale) you count up DEGREES of the SCALE.
The fifth of G is D. Notes in the key of G are: G A B C D Fsharp
G A B C D E Fsharp=1 2 3 4 5 6 7,
D=5

Try G# melodic minor over G.

Haha, just kidding. Unless it's G7, in which case it actually sounds great.

I would use something in B phyrgian and B phrygian dominant becuase it's the third mode of G major or G major with a #5 If you wanted to imply G lydian, I would use B minor or B harmonic minor.

That said, B minor pentatonic or B blues would work, too. If you wanted to go outside a little, B wholetone would work, just be careful how you resolve it.
