Galloping

What's your guys' take on building galloping chops? I've put in countless time with a metronome and playing Iced Earth songs slowly, and I still can not play up to speed with the CD's. I know this is going to fill up with a lot of posts about metronomes and building it up slowly, but that doesn't seem to be working. Anything else you guys recommend? I've tried just trying to play along to the CD and just pushing myself, but I don't like doing that because I'm playing sloppy as shit and can't really do it anyways, so I'm sure that's just going to teach me bad habits.

Just measured for reference to better explain. I can gallop at about 180 bpm pretty solid starting out, then I start to get tired and get sloppy. That I can work on since it's just endurance. Pretty much getting past that point is where I'm tense and can't really do it that well. 190 I can still kind of gallop, but I'm tense so fuck that.

EDIT: Although, this may not be a fair judgement since I just started playing again after 2 weeks of resting my wrist after I sprained it pushing my piece of shit car. (insert Adam Sandler song here)

I'd just take it down a few notches to a tempo where you can do it without your hard getting tired and tensing up, and keep practicing it there until you can move the tempo up with ease.

RIP MIKE

Pickingwise, make sure you're using either DUD- or D-DU for gallops. It seems comfortable to alternate pick the gallops, but working around the primary rhythm of DUDU for 16th notes will keep the 16 rhythm going.

Oh yeah, use a metronome and work your way up

180? Thats the speed in BPM of Iced Earth's "Wolf"...

I dunno, when i started playing, i had the opposite problem. I could play the triplets at tempo, but i couldnt do them for more than 1 verse or so of a song.

as far as endurance, i just jammed along to travel in stygian and coming curse until i could do the whole song without getting tired

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

I'm doing DUD DUD DUD for gallops. When I first started playing, I did them DUD UDU DUD UDU etc. which actually didn't work too bad. This had the side effect of me having absolutely no down picking chops because I learned to alt pick EVERYTHING. I've been working on it, but I'm still gimped when it comes to that. I have taken it down a few notches, I generally sit there and gallop at like 170. I mean, I know I'll never be Jon Schaffer, but I have a friend who wants to jam some Iced Earth and it's just kicking me in the balls The thing that really pisses me off is I can trem pick fine, probably 200+ bpm, and not get tired...

I'm pretty much a notch or 2 below NotSR speed. I can play pretty much any song on that album (with the exception of the acoustic track) slowed down

Well, alternating as opposed to DUD probably isn't too huge of a difference, it's just the proper technique thing to do.

I find it's a big difference. It's like all down picking vs alt picking something. Sounds way different, plus when your doing DUD you get in the flow, it's basically like picking 16th's except your skipping a note, instead of DUD pause UDU pause, etc.
