![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I don't listen to much Iced Earth, so this might not be of much help, but, are you practicing both regular and reverse gallops? ie: Regardless of whether you're actually likely to use both permutations, it pays to practice both, as well as switching between the two, as co-ordination is just as important as stamina. Using a simple displaced beat in the background (think the riff after the solo in "Blackened" by Metallica) you'll get a cool groove that'll let you work on switching between one and the other, soon enough you'll have a right hand tighter than the girl hogtied in your closet ![]() |

The typical Jon Schaffer rhythm is 0 000 0 000 000 or some variation there of I've never heard of a "reverse" gallop, to me, a normal gallop is your reverse gallop, and your regular gallop is just a gallop with an extra note thrown in to vary it up a bit. |

![]() ![]() | work on alternate picking 00000000 etc and down strokes only. dont just do 000 000 or 0 000 00 do other groupings too. 00000 00000 00000 etc 0 0 000 0 0 000 0 0 000 000 0 000 0 0 000 0 000 0 0 practice them 2 ways day 1 - as endurance exercises if you can top 180, play them at 160 for 3 minutes. 3 times. with a 60 second break in between. the next time you practice this, do it again at 161....then next time 162 etc day 2 - as speed burst exercises work on bursting the patterns at 200 for 30 seconds, then 202 for 30, then 204 for 30 and so on. Keep going til you cant play the patterns for the full 30 seconds. worked for me anyway, I can play this stuff in my sleep now......i hope. I no longer want children, I have a Black Machine. http://www.shredtraining.com http://www.jonstrange.com Will add clips when I have time. |

![]() ![]() | It just takes time and organization. I have always found the 000 000 gallops etc a lot easier than straight out alternate picking, you are the opposite. I work on my alternate picking a lot because I don't need to work on the gallops anymore, so maybe you should work on your gallops and back off the alternate picking. Unless you have time to practice both of course. Maybe your pick hand position is totally different when you alternate pick compared to when you gallop? If this is the case then try galloping in the same position that you alternate pick with. Also, work on down strokes a lot....a lot. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I can alt pick 16ths at 190+, but still have trouble with Stygian. ![]() Pretty much anything on Something Wicked I can do though. Prophesy is fucking fun. I'd start with SWTWC and then work on Stygian, but then I still can't play that shit. I need to learn Desert Rain here soon. ![]() |
