Hey dudes, like the title says, I'm lookin for some stuff to practice that will really strengthen my chops, mostly alternate picking. What do you guys use for that kind of stuff?

Just take some scales and make up your own licks to practice along to a metronome. That's what I do.
Good way to get your chops into shape, work on your timing and writing your own stuff. ![]()

Gambale is the last guy I'd go to for alternate picking, though.
Petrucci's Rock Dicipline is a good way to go. How's the Cooley "Art of Picking" DVD? It sounds like it's mostly "here's a bunch of kickass picked runs" and less about the actual mechanics, and I could stand to do some work on my picking mechanics...

AoP is a great disc, although it'll only really be of use to you if you've already gone over the contents of 'Intense Rock', and ideally 'Rock Discipline' and 'Speed Mechanics...' too.

Just because Gambale uses economy picking much more, doesn't mean he is not good at alternate picking. His Chopbuilder DVD does have a lot of exercises that do use alternate picking ! I would actually recommend that one, too ! |
