His Chopbuilder DVD does have a lot of exercises that do use alternate picking !
I would actually recommend that one, too !
It's a common misconception about his technique...economy picking is actually only one technique he uses; for certain fingerings he reverts back to alternate picking. This is one of the things that Troy Grady has promised to explain in detail in 'Cracking the Code'.

I strongly agree. This is important in most aspects of guitar, as far as developing your own style, and not only improving technique, but creating technique.

I think it's called "Speed Techniques"...

Whatever it's called, I have it, and it's actually a good book... Now if only I worked out of it more.

Ignorance is not bliss. Ignorance only hides the truth. And the longer that truth has to hide, the more it stings when it makes itself known.

I just had a lesson over the weekend and I thought I was using alternate picking, but it turns out I use economy picking all the time.

You're semi-right in that he doesn't talk about the actual mechanics too much, but even just working through the last exercise (which is where I started, because it's the first thing he does in the video) forced me to tweak my mechanics through each section of the exercise. For that though, basically I just sat down, thought about it, played really slow, observed myself, and maybe watched Shawn Lane do a picking run a few times to try to identify better ways of doing it.

The big downside, I think, is that though it sounds pretty nice slow, it sounds like shit at speed (not that I can play the whole thing in 50 odd seconds anyways).

Great book, did my chops wonders! Really tightened up my playing and fixed some technical flaws. I'm still poking at it.
