Exclamation HELP!! I swear to god im about to quit guitar because of this...!!

right so as some of you may know i changed my picking stlye from anchored with my thumb resting on the strings to non anchored thumb off (the right way)

BUT when i pick it feels like my hand is completely out of control at say 4notes per beat at 108bpm which is unbelieveable slow... not only this but my wrist physically feels it will not et me pick any faster atall, so ive come to the conclusion i must be using the wrong muscles or something because even a noob can force himself to pick quite fast uncleanly i cannot

i use as little of the pick as possible even tried it with jazzIII 's and no avail ive been at it now for about 2 months and im getting unelievable pissed off as i uswed to be able to pick 4npb at around 160bpm but all of the notes were nearly cut off because of the resting thumb so please do not reccomend going back to the original style

i need advice on this seriously

1-which mscles to use
2-videos demonstating good technique
3- pix of your position

anything will help

i am gettin unbelievable pissed so

Shredding Isn't Music..........Its Awesome!!!

1. use only wrist, muscles - to many in forearm to tell exactly
2. search forum for Guthrie Govan vids - about month ago or so, he talks there about that

The best advice anyone can give is GO SLOW. I cannot stress this enough, I fucked up my technique badly by trying to play really fast all the time, and even when it was above my comfort level. I recommend practicing the fundamental picking exercises (The PG lick, sixes ascending on two strings, sixes descending, etc.) starting with a down stroke for the first play through, and then starting on an up stroke on the second play through. The number one thing you want to focus on is economizing the motions. The problem I had with my picking was my movements were big and jerky, therefore, not allowing me to play at the speed I wanted to. Also, use ONLY your wrist to pick when on an individual string, but, use your arm to travel from string to string to ensure that every note is picked exactly the same. If you want to see an example of this technique, look at Rusty Cooley. He's the best one I can think of. A user on this board (guitarplayerone) told me NOT to focus on gradually building speed, but, only playing VERY slowly, and your slow speed will gradually get higher on a semi-conscious level. I hope this helps!

Every note has to be the same length of time - almost certainly, you are speeding up and slowing down at certain places within each lick. What happens then is that when you try to apply some acceleration, some notes can be sped up more and others lag, and the whole thing falls apart. I find it useful to take a short lick, six or eight notes, and play it in several different ways - starting with the index finger and three notes per string, starting with the ring finger and two notes per string, etc. Just make up something simple and figure up a few patterns to get to it, skipping a string, arpeggiating, maybe one with a slide in it. Then just slow them down until you find a speed where you can get that same lick to sound the same, played different ways. At that point you'll be able to start applying a surprising amount of crank, because you will have worked through the speeding-up-within-a-lick-due-to-position problem.

As everybody from Morse to Gilbert to Petrucci says, most difficulties come when you're trying to determine the direction of the next pick stroke when you're changing from one string to the next. It feels unnatural, until it doesn't.... You do have a metronome? That and a notepad are the easiest way to keep an accurate record of progress.

Ahh, I forgot to mention note duration. Thanks for pointing that out.

i totally pick the wrong way, when i hold my pick, it looks like the classic "i'm holding a joint"
pose, but i can speed pick like a motherfucker

i dont think there is a "right" way, but there is a "right" way for each person, so who cares if your not doing it the traditional way, if it works for you, use it.

I met a guy who basically moved at the elbow to speed pick, he was fast as hell, but i was just as fast doing it my way, but neither of us could do it well at all using the others method

there's not really a "wrong" way...it really comes down to what's most comfortable to you, and best suits your playing style.
