Stupid Keyboard Question v1.0
The first of many, no doubt.
I'm learning "Exit Music" by Savatage off of EOT, because it's simple, and just a really pretty piece of music. Oddly, though I'm a shredder, it's my left hand that's having more trouble cooperating than my right. Anyway, I'm trying to develop the right habits now, because it's obviously way easier for me to play parts with notes close together if I just keep my hands right next to each other. However I'm finding that if I do that, my right hand has to jump all over the place to reach higher registers. That said, does this seem like an unreasonable stretch? The far left G is the root note/bass note, and the one up an octave is part of the melody. I'm having an issue keeping my pinky consistent on the root note while playing the melody, because I play every note BUT the higher G with my right hand. Should I just shift my entire right hand over, or get used to doing it this way? I *think* that once I practice this though, my left hand will stop wanting to act like my fretting hand. ![]() |

Ah, here's a better site, where you can actually hear the part I'm playing. The low register notes are the ones I'm using my pinky for.

I can't answer your question, but I would suggest to get a teacher, so you will learn the correct hand positions, techniques, etc.

I would find yourself a local piano teacher and get into learning basic hand positions. You haven't been playing for long, so bad habits haven't been picked up yet, and any mistakes can still be easily corrected.

not at all octaves are quite small stretches in comparison to some of the things that Rachmaninov did

I've been playing piano for ten years now.
First of all, your form in that picture is off. Practice curving your fingers to get optimal strength when pushing down the keys (You have a keyboard, does the action provide decent and realistic resistence? Some do). And that 5 chord your playing there is not bad. I'll play Master of Puppets on keys (ryhtmn on left, lead on right) and its really the only song I play with lots of powerchords. Powerchords are a bit unnatural to piano, triads (C-E-G maj. C-Eb-G min. etc.) and extensions and embellishments of triads are much more natural. Chris: Pianoweb.net: Technique Training Read that site, I looked it over and it knows what its talking about. If you lookup technique often for new shit (like scale runs and moving your thumb under your third finger to continue playing, for example) you'll be ok without a teacher: Synth based keyboard isn't nearly as difficult and teacher demanding as classical piano. |
