![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Modes (books, DVD's etc) Alright guys. I really want to be able to use modes within my lead playing. I've been playing for 10 years now and it's dreadfull that I don't even know how to use modes, I've focused too much time on technique and gear. When I play with my band we don't concentrate on which key we're playing in, we just play what sounds and works right to us. So when it comes to me to put down a solo, the progression behind it isn't in a specific key. So I just use the main 'note' we resolve to as my base note and use the harmonic minor scale to play with. It bores me. Is there a book or DVD that explains modes and how to use them in a very simple and easy to understand way? "Thank you boob lady!" - Homer Simpson, the Simpsons Movie |

![]() ![]() | Get Doug Doppler's Diatonic Theory DVD. It's cheap, a good starting point, and has got everything from beginners to advanced stuff in it. Another good one is Desi Serna's instructional DVDs, specifically Guitar Modes. Of all the instructional DVDs that I've got these two are the best. The Grimoire is also very good! |

![]() | Hey, i am in the exact same boat as you. Been playing guitar for 10 years and I want to learn my fret-board inside and out. I picked up Troy Stetina's "Fretboard Mastery" just yesterday. I think as with learning to play guitar in the first place, modes/scales/chords/arpeggios/harmony/theory is just another step worth taking, and its gonna be a real challenge, and takes a lot of self dedication. No one else is gonna do it for me or you, right? Ne ways Fretboard Mastery has alot of stuff on modes, but alas i have not even broken into the first part of the book yet. Gotta memorize all of the note names on each string. obviously the E's and A string are easy (10 years of finding keys and roots) but the other strings may take another night. wish me luck! p.s has anyone else gone through this book yet? its pretty hefty. |
