Richie Kotzen: 'Rock Chops'
Just spent a couple of hours working through this video. A few thoughts...
1) His finger-span scares me. 2) His early style had a hell of a lot in common with Derek Taylor's ideas, i.e. legato phrasing, travelling in octaves, wide stretches... There's even a little bit of spocking in places, although it's not tabbed in the booklet. 3) Most of my old shred videos are a lot more accessible since I worked through 'Intense Rock Complete'. |

haha that's the first instructional I ever saw
![]() It was '98/'99 or so, my friend got that on tape - together with Steve Morse's "Power Lines" and some MAB's video. I only had a 3/4 acoustic guitar at the time and zero chops but I tried legato ![]() Ah, the early teens... i want those years back... |

one of my favorite players.
I have that on tape somewhere. I should pull it out and see how weak my legato really is ![]()

awesome tape. never occured to me to use anything but root-third-fifth before that one. he destroyed that idea really fast in his improv at the beginning

That video is absolutely ridiculous isn't it. He matured a bit later and focused more on bluesier things which is awesome, but if you want to see absolutely jawdropping playing rock chops is pretty much where it's at
