Some good "shred" riffs that arn't insanely fast

I've been trying to learn the solo from "Dying in your arms" by Trivium, its actually pretty simple (its just a few patterns over and over again). But It is very fast.

Can anyone recommend any good songs/solos which will help me start out on this whole "shred" thing?

Yes, I do have a metronome.

Ah, your problem is you're learning Trivium. Most people try to avoid fecal matter in their music diet.

Anyway, start on the stuff that gets you into it. Metallica and Megadeth are good gateways to harder stuff. I'd recommend listening to virtuosos like Satriani, Vai, Gilbert and so forth if you want to break into guitar-heavy music. Basically anyone who's played in G3.

Perhaps check out some of Gilbert video lessons or some sites like chopsfromhell.com

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

I happen to like Trivium. Dying in your arms is a good solo to learn. Just keep building up speed on those triad arpeggios.

All it is is practice.

One of my favourite solos to play is Satriani's "Rubina".

I listen to a lot of the virtuoso stuff, in fact Paul Gilbert is my favorite guitarist. But I just listen to their stuff, and can never convince myself to try and learn it.
For the Love of God seemed pretty simple when I first listened to it, but then I kinda gave up after a few phrases. Any other recommendations on songs?

How about one of Jason Becker's slower clean songs? Air? Altitudes?

I started with Eugene's Trick Bag.

Not too fast, but gets you started on a lot of stuff.

I think our definitions of "fast" may be slightly different?

The first 'shred' thing I learned was Eugene's Trick bag too. Just learn it slow and clean.

Also learn that JohnC canon rock thing. its really overdone nowadays but is a good place to start (when I learned canon rock back like what, seven years ago, youtube didnt exist and everyone didnt overdo the song... but I digress)

Ive found that interestingly enough, Mozart's Rondo alla Turka (Turkish March) works out my alternate picking better than any exercise out there. And when you play it at the origional speed its really manageable.

Really, just take almost any decent speed violin part to a classical song and learn that, or the upper part of a piano song

There's nothing that says you have to play it at the speed Vai plays it at. It sounds pretty nice slowed down. The thing I was getting at really is that it has quite a few useful tricks embedded in it. 6 string arps, string skipping, and a nice picking passage. And the ostinato thing in the beginning is good for your pinky.

When I first learned it it was probably at like half speed or something.
