OK so either I'm boring the fuck out of people or everyone here contains some kind of musical degree...anyhoo, I'm still riding the lightening of theory . Something that I really enjoyed to night was finally appreciating what Rusty said in his interview, about how on the 7 string you can do a 3 octave run with little re-positioning...well before learning any theory this meant absolutely nothing to me, but now it all makes perfect sense. Also, I am able to play chords all over the fretboard, knowing now, full well which fucking chords I am playing..now I'm having fun...what a difference, honestly it's like night and day. Man I'm going to kick major fucking arse at this Friday's jam session.

"and we'll also be establishing, beyond all scientific doubt, that ANY note can be made to sound good over ANY chord, so long as you put it in the right place!" Guthrie Govan

DUde, keep it going. its all good. i have nothing really to contribute. you're discovering what makes guitar, and music in general so great.

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

I found it great. My theory's a bit weak and little things like that make me happy...

If you have some tips about learning/memorizing/playing modes, that'd be real great...

Dang I'm just starting myself, I'm like a lab rat if you will, an experimant that is obviously looking to be successful. I've posted everything I've learned and anything else I'll do the same. I was thinking of perhaps finding a way to make my fretboard a little more functional...

lol hilarious pic dude, although one string break and all those fret markers go to hell.

Anyway thanks man, we're in the same boat Still, I've seen some really hopeless cases. I don't know jack about theory, but I still where the notes are on the fretboard and how to transpose so I can still improvise.

The other day I met this kid who had been playing for 8 (!) years. I said, "Alright jam in something easy first, like A minor" and the kid looked at me incredulously. He was like, "I don't know that stuff. I use tabs."

Just for the record, I've been playing for only one year .I tried to keep a straight face :P Then I started shredding like crazy and blasted his face off

Well take some advice then , take it from a fool like me...learn, learn all that you can. Learn what you can play when and where, and once you've learned the rules, then you can bend them to suit your style. Oh BTW maybe that kid was me, like last week

I'm working on it... So music stores are the best place to find a guitar teacher? I'm gonna get one so I can clean up my technique a bit and learn more theory... The main thing bugging me is those damn modes.

BTW, I'm in love with my metronome. I just kind of started shredding from scratch, never used a metronome, but I've gone back and started working on my rhythm a bit lol

And from what I know, that kid is still playing that Blink 182 shit it took him 8 years to learn

I can only speak for myself when I say that your daily revelations are just plain fun to watch. Takes me back to when I was tripping my way through it.

Now, it won't get hard until you start asking "why?". Then it get interesting.

Right now I'm just taking it, I guess like a typical Canadian, we never ask why
