Holy Crap I just Learned How to Build Chords

Man this theory stuff is WILD. I just learned how to build major chords, using 1, 3(counting 4 1/2's) and 5(counting an additonal 3 1/2's)...however I also discovered by using the circle of 5ths that I can easily build chords that way also. Thanks to Chris for posting that clock, I simply look to the right for the 5th and to get the third I count up 4 from the root. Or I count up 4 to get the third then back three to get the fifth. Man oh man I need to use the washroom, this calls for a celebratory tsiing of the goods

Please don't spoil the rest for me I want to work it out on my own...

Ok, thanks Drew, and not too boast but I can now build any (root)maj7, or (root)minor7 chord. Using the circle of fifths clock in the maj 7th I simply, like before start with the root,count up 4 to get the third, one to the right of the root to get the 5th and one 1/2 note below the root to get the 7th. So Amaj7 would be AC#EG#.
Now with the Am7, with the circle(or clock sorry), I start with the root, go 180 degrees on the inner circle to get the minor third, move one note right to get the 5th(back on the outer circle) and go 180 degrees(on the inner circle) from the 5th to get the minor 7th. So Am7 would be ACEG

Glad you just learned how to build chords. Pretty basic stuff (but most rock guys can't do it).

I've never learned anything about the piano, but I can sit down at one and make any chord because the piano is basically the ultimate musical instrument for theory. Just apply theory and bam! I can make any chord I can think of without ever having taken one piano lesson or read anything about playing piano. (Of course, music theory classes oftentimes use the piano as an example for teaching theory).

Well then I am an idiot savant then...ok for a chord 1,3 and 5 start with the root note, say A, and for the fifth you move one to the right(E), (clockwise) and for the third, you move 4 to the right(C#) from the root note..and for the perfect 4th you move one to the left (D) (counterclockwise). It also works with minors as well!

I know some basic theory, not really enough to apply it without some serious thought though. I would like to brush up on it since my writing skills are absolute crap. Nothing I try and write sounds decent to me. Perhaps some theory would give me the kick in the ass I need.
