Anyways, so in summary, the best videos are:
* Paul Gilbert's Intense Rock (1/2) Not only hilarious, but great instructionals. * Shred Guitar Manifesto IMO definitely the best of Rusty's videos, it's stellar. * The Art of Picking I haven't seen Basic Training but this is Rusty's 2nd best in my opinion. Extreme Pentatonics is much more specialized. * John Petrucci - Rock Discipline Also good for technique. Also, pretty good theory wise, is Paul Gilbert's Guitars From Mars (Rock and Classical). You can see the whole thing on Youtube. Definitely recommend you check that out while it's still on Youtube and free. ![]() |

Suggestion...don't get stuck in the trap of studying nothing but shred instructionals. The Gilbert/Petrucci/Cooley stuff is awesome, but it shouldn't come at the expense of ear-training and developing a good sense of phrasing. Study all of that stuff, and you'll be a much more complete improvisor.
For starters, you could try Gary Willis' 'Ultimate Ear-training' book, which is extremely dry, but does the job. In addition, study up on chord/scale relationships, and start listening to more melodic soloists, like Jeff Beck, who rely more on timing and note-choice than fast scales and arpeggios. If you pair everything you learn from them up with everything you learn from Gilbert/Cooley/Petrucci and company, then you'll be on to something. |

DR: I would have repped you, but I have to spread some around. If you can't apply the techniques in a musical situation, they become worthless. You need to work on basic phrasing and basically sounding good before you try to take a lick from Shred Guitar Manifesto out of context. In a sense, you can't run before you can walk.

![]() He's right... If you look at it another way, music's like a language (I've thought of it in this way for a while now, and I know other guys like Scott Henderson and Paul Gilbert do as well); when you learn to speak for the first time as a baby, you don't start of by learning grammar, spelling and sentence structure, you start of simply, mimicing other people's phrases, and gradually expand your vocabulary of words and phrases until you can speak fluently on your own. Later on you might study the nature of language to refine this further, if you wanted to write prose or poetry for instance, but that isn't important when you're taking your first steps. Look at it this way, if someone was learning to speak French for the first time, you wouldn't give them a book of Arthur Rimbaud's poetry to work through, as it would be way, way too complex for them; you'd start off teaching them basic words and phrases and teaching them to speak conversationally before you even thought about tackling the highest order of French literature. |

LOTS, Did you ever enter the Steve smyth contest over at that board? Anyway, the solo needs some work, there seems to be very little sructure and I agree with the things that have been said in this thread.

Except for maybe TAOP, those vids don't ignore theory -- they give an amount appropriate to his level, I think. I mean, they don't just throw out licks, but they'll say for example, this is in the key of Cm, this is an Am7b5 arpeggio, I like to use this one over a Phrygian chord progression (5th mode of harmonic minor) etc.
Paul Gilbert's Guitars From Mars in particular is quite good at that -- it goes over pretty basic theory, spelling things intervallically, using things over the appropriate chords, stuff like that. I wouldn't call it a shred instructional either -- it's more of a blues-blues/rock focused video. Rusty Cooley's (and Petrucci's) videos are basically awesome technique training videos with quite a few licks given in appropriate context, but Paul Gilbert definitely stresses phrasing and dynamics. In all seriousness though, I really liked your solo except for the sloppiness and kind of wandering feel. Keep it up. |
