Help me out make a practice routine
alright guys, I've realized that I've been playing 9 years but never made a practice routine. Ever since I saw the video of Mick Thompson doing chromatics I thought to myself I can't get my fingers to work that well together so I started picking that up and little by little I'm getting better with it. What can you guys recommend? I'm looking for basic stuff to develop a routine.

First of all make a list of the areas you want to improve in.
Then divide an hour/2 hours into ten minute increments and practice everything in bursts, taking a few minutes break between each one, and a longer break about half-way through. Try running through that once in the morning and once in the evening, and then just jam and have fun whenever you pick up the guitar any other time. What areas do you want to improve in specifically? |

Ok, here's a surefire routine for you:
1. Pickup guitar 2. Plug into amp 3. Turn amp on (not with your boyish good looks or charm, flip the switch) 4. Play guitar 5. Don't suck ![]() Actually, DR has it right. Figure out what you want to do and then divide your practice time up to work on each thing for a few minutes at a time so that way you don't become bored by trying to work on sweeping for 5 hours straight or alternate picking for 45 minutes. And keep practicing. Also, make sure you do some sort of a warm up to really loosen your hands up. It helps.
I am the mask you wear.

well first thing is first, my timing sucks ass. I never been in a band or practice with a metronome. So thats my weakest point for damn sure. I want to develop my fingers which is why I'm doing chromatics. I want to improve my songwriting ability as well. My rhythm needs to be tightened up, I like Fear Factory type rhythms personally. Alternate picking is a weak link but not that link, I tend to do it but I don't know how to control it to a rhythm so it goes back to metronome. its really just basic stuff that deals with song writing and playing rhythm.

Sounds like the best thing would be fairly simple, repetitive exercises just to help with your rhythmic control and finger independance. Have you got Troy Stetina's 'Speed Mechanics' book? It's got lots of great advice about improving technique and constructing a practice regime.

I wouldn't really recommend that TBH, as it's not really a 'licks' book. It's more a manual on how to get the best results out of your practicing.
