Baritone country guitar
I'm thinking of trying out for some local country bands around here just so I can actually get out and play every once in a while. Does anyone know of any ways in which I can utilise my seven-string to compliment or add something unique to a country song? I can't say I'm really familiar with the ins and outs of this kind of music but if anyone has any ideas as to how I could successfully impliment the lower range, or can reccommend any music with examples of cool baritone country playing, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Try Steve Morse's tune 'Tri-county Barn Dance' off the 'Major Impacts 2' album. Just go for twangy low melodies on the bass strings. Brad Paisley's 'Munster Rag' has some baritone stuff on it IIRC...

Steve Morse should have been the first place I looked, I can't believe I didn't think of that first. Apparently he has a column in Guitar World these days that is all on the CD rather than in the magazine, I'd check it out but I don't want to have to pay $20 to find out. Thanks! I'm sure I could learn a thing or two from playing country music, and hopefully I can add something positive to the band if I happen to get in. I'd love to be able to play lap steel but I just don't have the time to dedicate to it; I barely get enough time for regular guitar (in my mind, at least). There's a great slide player around here that I've always wanted to take lessons from, maybe someday I will... |

Steve Earle uses a baritone on some of his stuff. The first one that comes to mind is 'Guitar Town'.

Thought I'd bump this thread due to a revelation I had recently: in order to find ways to compliment a standard-tuned guitar with a seven-string, I don't have to necessarily look for examples of baritone guitar playing, I can also look to examples of capoed guitar accompaniments and transpose their ideas to the lower range of my seven. So obvious, yet I didn't realise it until just now.

Many of the popular, modern country acts are playing in drop D.

Open tunings can open up a lot of ideas as well, especially if you're after pedal-steel effects.
