Smile Non-Fiction: What do you like to read?

When I was younger I used to read nothing but non-fiction...then I sort of progressed into reading fiction.

I still read a lot of non-fiction (but am reading more and more fiction as well).

I'm really into reading about military aircraft, the history of cinema, reptiles/amphibians (herpetology) and recently criminology

What sort of subjects do you guys and girls like reading about?

More words here is more words.

music theory, music history, sound engineering, movie industry, business books, poetry and history.
I rarely read fiction books, I think they are a waste of time, I could spend my time reading about something that I might have some use for.

You know, I love, love fiction, and I don't agree with this personally.... but I can see your point. It's why, even though I love a good story, I usually read more (volume of reading-wise) nonfiction than fiction. Feel like I accomplished something.

Ok, that out of the way, man, I have some seriously eclectic reading tastes. I read so much... I guess my favorite stuff is, in no particular order -

Evolution and evolutionary psychology
Motivational (think Tony Robbins)
Ecology and conservation
Nature Writing (like Thoreau)
History
Biographies
Pretty much anything science or technology related, especially as pertains to human communities, sustainable development, and/or history of the future

Anything by David McCullough. The Path Between the Seas is my favorite, and I am currently reading 1776.

If you have any interest in history you should check out his books. He presents things in a way that reads more like a fast paced fiction novel than a history text. Really, though, the drama in real life is more exciting than anyhting an author could dream up.

Anything by Carl Sagan and Howard Zinn.

Also books about astronomy, the history of comic books, history especially when it comes to social movements and "radicalism", historical documents like Common Sense and The Rights of Man by Thomas Paine, philosophy and religion.

Actually I read a lot more nonfiction than fiction.

The only proof he needed for the existance of God was music.
Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

Without music, life would be a mistake.

I'm reading (well, actually, listening. Books on CD FTW) his 'John Adams' right now. Just started it, after finishing renowned primatologist Franz De Waal's fascinating 'Our Inner Ape' on CD. I read even when I'm not reading! (I never listen to radio while I drive anymore. Pretty much just books on CD.)

McCullough is a Pulitzer prize-winning writer. Seriously high caliber stuff. And! there's more!

Anyone interested in in history, but with a more fictional bent, should check out the other famous McCullough, Colleen! Her Masters of Rome series is probably the best historical fiction I've ever read.

Not a lot to be honest, its mainly selected autobiograpies, or the odd interesting book, like Richard Dawkins' material, or Alex Zanardi's biography, mainly anything to do with motorsport I'll read.

I don't tend to read much offline though.

Would you class reference books as non fiction? If so, my CCNA book I have I guess.

I actually discovered Zinn from 'Good Will Hunting.' It's one of my favorite movies, and that scene where Matt Damon is checking out Robin William's office library had me curious, since I couldn't understand what he said, but it impressed me, since he said, regarding American History, that it would "blow (Robin's) mind."

I listened to it like 15 times, before I finally could tell he said, "Zinn's 'A People's History." Read it, and indeed, it blew my fucking mind.
